krn
Today I test drove a 2000 S40 with 98K miles. I had one major concern: When going over speed "humps" (not bumps) I heard a thunk from the rear of the car. This was at 20-25 MPH. Probably passenger side. Suspension parts appear to be all original. I'm aware the front suspension can have issues with spring seats and there are updated parts. The clunk did not seem to be coming from the front. I also noticed the front passenger side tire was worn mostly on the outer edge and the owner says the tires had recently been rotated. I have never seen a rear tire wear like that. The car has never been in an accident and it tracked straight when driven. I know it's not a lot to go on. I suppose I'm hoping to hear "they all clunk like that, easy fix, just tighten up the exhaust hanger" Thanks
Ihatespeedbumps
It's likely the rubber bushing in the rear toe adjustment rods is shot, causing the clunk. Volvo calls them a "control link" P/N for those are 30620785 Also, check for broken rear coil springs, especially in high corrosion areas.

The rear suspension is a bit more complicated than my S70! It's a California car and we rarely see serious rust issues. But I'll still take a closer look. Thanks again. We have a few incidents of S40 have broken springs (front and rear). Glad i'm not on OEM springs any longer
loseR99
best thing you could do on a 2000 would be to replace it with 01' springs, struts, and end links. The 2000 S40's sit ridiculously high in the front and the 01'+ seem to hold up better...but are still stuff either way HAHA! if you're replacing the suspension take Warren's advice, ditch the oem stuff for some H&R's or Eibachs and get some Bilstein struts and shocks, it will ride and handle much nicer than it ever did. krn
Bought the car. Front suspension was updated to 01 parts at 25K (now has 98K). I also see a brake vacuum pump update and an update for headlight wiring (car has all records and it was dealer serviced for first 50K miles). Lots of common stuff like thermostat, ECT, hazard switch replaced, etc. Looks like previous owners kept on top of it since I also see transmission fluid changes and coolant changes. One odd thing is the records show three sets of rear rotors and pads (replaced twice) in 98K miles. Thats a lot of rear rotor wear or agressive "service writing". The suspension still seems a bit creaky too me (maybe they all do that). Lots of tire noise, too. So I'll look at that after the timing belt is done (that has priority). A few other small things like a droopy driver sun visor; headlights aim down; rear door locks sometimes stick; air vents rattle; power mirror switches seem touchy, etc. The car is actually for my daughter. She paid for most of it and I "consulted" (that is what Dad's do). She wanted a white, small, 4 door sedan that was a bit different then the useual Honda or Toyota. I pushed for an S70. She countered with "I'm thinking Prius" (well played). The idea is to have something to last the next four years while she is in college. I think the S40 will meet the goal pretty easily (and with a bit of style) but I don't see any lowering springs in the near future (But I still have hope for her younger sister.) Good Luck getting it in shape. For reference, here is my 01', they can look really sharp with a little work.

LoseR99, nice s40. Kind of wish you had not posted that Now all I see is the huuuge gap in the front wheel well when I look at ours'! The rear clunk turned out to be the spare and the tools which were just thrown into the spare tire well. Tools were unwrapped. I do still get a clunk from the front (over speed humps) that I can feel in the floor. But I feel a lot more confident in trouble-shooting the front suspension.
