Ipd
I'd be happy to post up the cad file if anyone else wants to confirm it
lookforjoe
I'd be happy to post up the cad file if anyone else wants to confirm it I guess my question is whether the mark on the cam represents 0º, or the normal timing placement for the application - which I believe is EXH 4º Adv , INT 0º , on turbos. Would that alter the reference, and which is true? If it was 0º, then why would the exhaust & intake have different marker positions? I don't know the answer, which is why I'm asking... Ipd
Base cam timing actually varies from market to market and also on engine configuration. The OE cam lock tools have different ends on them for different markets/engines. The graduations on the tool I designed are based on US spec base cam timing and are relative to the OE cam locking tool. By using the OE cam lock tool to hold everything in place then measure against the gears the adjustment is plus or minus the base setting that you mentioned. So while it's nice to know where you are in relation to the stock setting I feel the value in the tool is the ability to precisely adjust from where you are now whether it's accurate to the OE base setting or not. 854TGA+
Can one replace the hydraulic timing belt tensioner with a mechanical one on a 1994 850t? That would make adjustment a whole lot easier imo.

That would make adjustment a whole lot easier imo. I do not understand why it would matter at all...You do not have to release tension on the belt to adjust cam timing, you turn the cam not the gear. I agree with what Lucky says regarding your timing and the tool being accurate relative to factory setting which if I understand is tool zero...that would also be true of the QBM tool minus the slop...what I don't know is, what absolute number the tool zero represents, and what is the factory setting on all the different configurations. For instance, I have a 98 T-5 with a 97 2.3L motor. My bench motor is the original 98 2.3. Is factory setting same for the two motors? What about a 2.4 turbo on H's XC, what about the guy who has an N/A? What about when I change to N/A cams on my 2.3? I would like some enlightenment in regard to this... I guess what I think "we" (read The Commissar! if you prefer) would like is a tool that the zero is zero advance/retard so we can all compare settings and share experience with them...and we would all be speaking the same language. lookforjoe
what I don't know is, what absolute number the tool zero represents That's what I'm still confused on - Is tool 0 zero degrees, or base timing for US market? (which again, should be exh 4º int 0º I'll (or someone else) will have to try the tool on a "virgin" setup to see what's what.

How do you define virgin...never had the timing belt done LOL!
lookforjoe
How do you define virgin...never had the timing belt done LOL! No, just one where the gears have not been touched relative to the cam, of which there is no need for t/belt replacement...

BlackT5
i was going to order an IPD cam timing tool because I wanted to compare to the QBM tool I have but shipping was going to be more than the cost of the tool. $23.25 shipping for a $21.75. Anyone have an IPD tool they are looking to sell?

BlackT5
Trying to figure out what tool is correct and what my actual cam timing is. My QBM tool is set at +3 EX and +2 IN. but if I put the IPD tool on, it would probably show -3 EX?
