V70 R Common Issues

From reading, there's really no real way to tell the condition of the AWD system besides listening for any clunks?

The car that I'm looking at, the guy said he doesnt have any records on the AWD system since he's only owned it 1 year. And he himself is a mechanic at local Benz dealership, and had his friend at Volvo dealership inspect it.

Anything to help me see what expensives it might have if I purchase would be great.

The best option would be to let a reputable Volvo shop (Indy or dealer) do a used vehicle inspection, and this will give you a good idea of the overall condition of the vehicle. Don't trust the "my friend looked at it story" Get another opinion. Should be under $200.

That being said, some of the common issues are angle leaks/failure, driveshaft issues, ETM issues on top of the normal things to look for on an X70 car.

Cooling system as well. Mine had numerous coolant leaks when I picked it up. As for the rear main I believe the 99+ ME7 models have revised seals and are not as finicky has older design. As for oil leaks in general, I'd also pop the timing cover off and check the cam seals and front crank seal for leaking. Other than that, typical wear and tear in the suspension and AWD. Motor mounts. Unless the mechanic who owned it was also a perfectionist and enthusiast, i'd expect to spend some to get it up to speed. Coil packs if they haven't been changed.

What kind of mileage is on the vehicle in question?

I agree with this!^ Motor mounts and coils are shot or about to go if this is a high miler Also drivesshaft front CV, vacuum lines and boost solenoid. Upgrade to the IPD HD or AC Delco version over OEm

Also check out v70R.com for threads for the AWD system... wink.giflaugh.gif

And rear suspension. And for that there is plenty about it already...smile.gif

...on top of the normal things to look for on an X70 car.

Which are the timing belt and seals, coil over ignition, motor mounts, vac lines, suspension, ETM, and PCV. Furthermore, the heater core, A/C condenser, and occasionally the turbo also fail occasionally on high mileage 12 year old Volvos. If you don't know when these have been replaced, budget for fixing/upgrading ALL of the first list immediately (before you even drive it).

True but there are also proper ways to test each component of the AWD system and I'll bet his friend at the Volvo dealership didn't do any of them.

There was a wiki on v70r.com about how to test each part but the WIKI section seems to have disappeared now that it's changed ownership.
