Strange Sound When Engine Is Getting Warm

Modus

Recommended Posts

Only starts making sound when engine is just about to operating temp.

First cold start it's quiet, then it slowly becomes audible till it sounds like a squeaky bed.

No change with AC on or drive belt off.

Sound drowns out when RPM is raised.

When engine warms up completely, sound goes away.

Is this related to the oil pump o-rings everyone talks about?

I have searched, haven't came across this sound but yet just the buzzing bee hive sound. This is not that.

The temp when start of sound occurs

Hey man, I'm not sure what the sound is but I can tell you that my car does the exact same thing. I assume nothing is wrong and I will list the new parts installed on my car, all are Genuine Volvo. (I'm just going to list all the new ones in that area to give you a little comfort.)

A/C comressor, Alternator, P/S pump (used good one swapped in), S Belt, S Belt idler, S Belt tensioner assembly/pulley, oil pan o rings, oil cooler line o rings @ t stat, oil tstat to pan gasket, water pump, t belt, tensioner, t belt idler, tensioner pulley

That would really only leave the oil pump but after changing my pan o rings oil can literally be seen pressure washing my top end if you take the filler cap off.

After everything I listed there's really nothing else in that area to be causing that noise.

I really wouldn't worry about it. (Mind you I do not often say that if my car's doing something weird.) Haha.

Do you only really hear the noise from the passenger side front of the car? If so that matches my scenario as well. It's not a really loud bed squeaking noise but audible for sure, that being said yours is a bit louder than mine but they're the same noise none the less. The video's audio could be a little deceiving as well which is probably more likely.

I will say my 16T has a good bit of shaft play, I can let you know if the noise changes after I install it's replacement that is sitting here awaiting a nice day for installation. Most likely not but who knows. :)

Aaron, I do appreciate your input with this. I too have replaced my t stat, water pump, t belt, tensioner and t belt idler.

I have not done anything else. The sound is strange. It only appears when the car is half warm, it does it for 10 minutes then stops.

Raising the RPM makes it inaudible. It's best heard exactly behind the front passenger wheel. Underneath almost where the oil pump is.

I'm almost thinking it could be oil pump bearings. But what would make the sound go away? It started around October when the temperature started to be around 40F ambient. I really have been ignoring it. But still annoying since I don't know what it is.

The oil lines don't have vibration when the sound is present.

I have not done my oil pan o-rings yet.

If you find anything interesting let it be known.

Yes, sounds like we have extremely similar minor annoyances. There's really nothing left to be causing that noise, honestly. I even went as far as removing my timing cover and hitting the moving timing components and water pump with WD-40 (went easy on it of course lol). Same deal here, it's present on mine @ warming up temp., go for a very short drive or wait a few minutes and boom, gone.

If I happen to run across anything I'd be happy to let you know and you do the same. :D

The oil pump, as you said is a possibility I assume. But I'm not willing to put 2 to 300 bucks on the line plus all my time into changing that with very little reason, ya know?

I too have a buzzing sound on my daughters 2000 S70, it's been there for at least a year. Happens a few minutes after start as the car warms up and stays, does not go away. Starts out low and gets louder. It's steady and sounds like a small electric motor. Not as noticeable as I raise the rpms, seems to go away. Timing belt, wp, tensioner, pulley replaced 7000 miles ago. Took the serp belt off, still the same. Coming from rear lower engine area. Thinking about doing the oil pan o-rings to see if that helps.

Aaron, did your o-ring replacement solve this?
