M66 Conversion Thread On A 98-00 Vr ?

Mine is all in the thread here

It's a straight parts swap on a '98, except for a fabricated bracket for the left side trans mount, and the M66 shifter cable bracket that has to be modified to accept the earlier cables. On an '00 - the only extra hardware you will need to source are '99 AWD axles, as the splines on yours won't fit the M66 diff.

Use the entire hydraulic clutch setup from an '00. You can use dual or single mass flywheel, but... single mass will need a hybrid clutch - I use the full dual mass setup with S60R clutch.

No difference between M66 used in different models except AWD or FWD versions, that I'm aware of.

You'll ned to make a bracket like this

Thanks Joe, I have read through your complete thread. I was alittle more interested how to deal with the ME7. Mine has a stage 2 ECU flash from InMotion tuning. So I was wondering how Nick (?) (94850tx) made it all work.

I don't think that's quite right on the passenger side axle. Aaron had to piece one together for my car. I'll have to ask him what he did.

Shouldn't be necessary - the '99 splines will match the '00 hub & the M66 - and the offset on the outer section of the shaft is no different.

I've given up on this myself...to get it done perfectly it's gonna cost me a small fortune. I don't drive my car enough anymore to justify it.

It wasn't that simple, Aaron had problems doing it that way if I remember correctly. The side of the axle that goes into the transmission wasn't long enough and was popping out.

Easy cost break down:

IPD Softloader $1.2K

Spec stage 3+ cluctch $1K (you'll need it with a good tune, etc)

M66 $1K (low mileage used)

Manual swap parts $300+

Might as well plan on at least another $500 in stage 0 stuff (motor mounts, sub frame mounts, etc) that are smart to do while it's apart.

Can you do it cheaper? Yup...you sure can. I wouldn't want to risk the stock S60R clutch that has issues on stock Rs myself.
