Anatoli
It used to work intermittently from the remote or from the inside lock button when the tailgate closed. Always clicks when the tailgate is raised to horizontal position. After I gave it a spray of silicon lubricant now it only works in horizontal position. Anything I could do to fix this easily. I do have an extra lock with motor from 1998 V70XC. Anyone had to deal with this. A little annoyed to go inside the car through the rear seats and open the tailgate when i need the stuff in the back. help is appreciated.
Emiel
Check the cable harness near the left hinge inside the car. The harness goes from the lock to a big connector near the C pillar but it gets ripped open by the hinge.
Guest mgc
I had this same intermittent issue with my V70 for several years. It would lock and stay locked until it felt like opening...what a PITA. I replaced the lock with one from Erie Vovo last fall and I have not had a problem since. RVovo offers lifetime warranty on the part.

Thanks to the other advice which i think makes sens why the lock would work when the tailgate is in horizontal position. ___.com has some pictures and posts regarding this issue from this year. I'll be checking the wiring by the left hand side hinge. thanks a bunch
