NYrobbie77
Hey all... I have a '98 V70 GLT FWD auto, 192k miles, that will not start when its very cold out. First time was last monday, it was -8 degrees F, and again this monday it was 6 degrees F. It start cranking normally, sputters once like it wants to start and then will just continue to crank w/out any indication that its trying to start. If i wait until it warms up to say 15-20 degrees out it starts and runs fine. I have an occasional evap leak code, but nothing else. All other weather the car starts and runs fine. did some searching, it seems that the ECT sensor is the likely culprit. before i replace it is there anything else i should be looking at? seen a few posts regarding crank/cam sensors, but they shouldn't be temp related failures, and again i have no codes. is there any table where i can get an ohm reading on the sensor and compare to ambiant temp? any advice/confirmation is welcomed. thanks in advance! rob
beewerks
This may not have anything to do with your problem, but I had a very similar issue with my 850 when it was around 0 degrees outside. I installed the MSD HD ignition coil that IPD sells and I have never had any starting issues ever again. May be worth looking into. http://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo-S70V70-P80/Electrical/Engine-Electrical/ipd-MSD-Ignition-Coil-Upgrade/p-128-363-365-3087/ By the way, you can buy the coil for much less elsewhere than what IPD sells it for. Good luck!
jablackburn
Try jumpering the fuel pump relay - they like to act up when it gets cold. Remove the lid from the upper fuse box panel, and remove relay 103. Then stick a piece of wire/paperclip between pins 15 and 87.Also, the ECT sensor would probably give you problems whenever starting on a cold engine - mine did when it was 50 something degrees outside since it thought the engine was warmer. Here's the table, though Temperature deg F ( deg C) Ohms 32 (0) .............................................. 7300 68 (20) ............................................. 2800 176 (80) ............................................. 300 212 (100) ............................................
NYrobbie77
kewl, thanks for the table, will check it out later and let ya know. i don't think its fuel related as when it does start it reeks of unburnt fuel and lets out big black cloud.
