Free Air Sub Rear Deck

i want to replace my rear deck speakers with free air subs......8'

i have a volvo s60 2002 with a aftermarket radio...

would that be a good idea?...i dont want any sub box in the trunk, dont like it.

Besides drilling and rewiring to the amplifier, would it be hard ?

As long as the subs are rated for free-air use, I don't see why not....just make sure the subs are the appropriate resistance (2, 4 or 8 ohms) to match up with the stock speakers and you won't have to rewire anything.

well..ok. Im going to power them with a amplifier....to take full advantage of it.

any other suggestions ?

Andyb5's advice is sound. Free air subs will yield free air bass, is that what you really want? If yes, then just need to start buying and installing your equipment of choice.

Good idea..I'd say take it 1 step further--since an 8" sub doesn't require much airspace, if it were me, I'd grab a couple shallow mount 8" subs, build a custom sealed enclosure, mount it to the underside of the rear shelf (probably only needs to be as deep as the sub itself +1") and have a very solid sub setup running about 2-300 RMS for a really nice low end.

8's on average are on the shallow side. The factory Dynaudio 8's will never give earth shattering low bass, but add enough power and the mid bass output borders on insane. Plus used they are cheap.

From what I understand (and having never personally heard them) the 8" Dynaudio's are a mid-bass driver, and not a true sub, and aren't rated for the kind of power a subwoofer needs to generate the truly low notes. A true 8" sub is capable of pretty solid bass down to around 25-30 Hz, which is right at the limit of the human hearing range.

I'm personally partial to Kicker subs, so here is a link to an 8" Kicker SoloClassic rated for 300 RMS and is capable of playing down to 28 Hz in a .33 cu. ft. sealed enclosure. Polk, JBL, JL Audio, Rockford Fosgate all have similiar 8" subs that will provide plenty of low end punch, especially in a pair.

sorry bud i hate kicker but thanks for the advice anyways...

i got a question....

can i do both, put the dynaudio mid bass on rear deck and put shallow subs in the trunk...????

or it would sound like crap ?

What's in the rear deck now, and why shallow subs? Compared to the normal counterpart shallows should be used as a last choice. Higher cost, plus the box needs to be larger than the manufacturers minimum spec. Your other posts here and on Swedespeed indicate that your stereo is in the closet, start the installation.

Not particularly. Not a vendor for the site. Nice wire kits are always on the bay for a reasonable price. Just get good quality wire suitable to your equipment. A free air setup would be the least amount of space, but the downfall I forsee is higher cost on the sub, but you can also get away with a smaller amplifier for max performance. This forum has many members with good audio advice. Why not take the time to post up a system with the maximum budget. Just have a thick enough skin to take the negatives.

what the heck then......ill use some trunk space.....for me it looks ugly in our cars, but well it would be the best bang for the bucket ;)

im not going to do the rear deck anytime soon anyways, i was just making my mind and asking people what they think.....to see if it would be good to do them in the future

im short on wiring, since im a student i dont work yet,so im saving lol.......i haven't done my front doors yet

still need the wiring for one amplifier and 2 RCA splitters.......gathering money in the piggy bank :D

If you want to save trunk space you might want to go with I know you said you are not a kicker fan but they do offer one of the lowest frequency responses on the market. You could do a 12" round Solo Baric or the higher end MTX woofer would do nicely. The amp is going to make a big difference in that area you pretty much get what you pay for. Fosgate amps are great and the don't use fans so they are made to run cool. I use three of them.
