DelawareT5M
Long story short, my car will be sitting for a while not being driven at all (damn you PA). As of right now it needs an engine transplant but that will come in time. Its currently sitting in a storage shed so everything's enclosed however not powered. I know a bunch of maintenance and cosmetic jobs I can do while it's out of commission but I want your opinions. Basically anything dirt cheap/free that I can do to improve appearance or overall maintenance. Small jobs, long jobs, cheap jobs Examples would be polishing, painting the volans crazy colors, etc List em PS. ghetto gardening lip was ditched a while ago
loseR99
Well, nothing will be entirely free. But...there are some cheap mods that will spiff up the look. For 1, if you don't have en eggcrate grille, i'd carefully remove the slash and paint the stock grill, then reapply the chrome slash. Did it on my old S40 and it came out great. waterfall grille mod Another cheap mod would be painting engine covers. Also there are some small electrical mods that are cheap and easy. Wire both rear brights to come one with the rear fog switch. Fog light tricks with the lows off, corners and fogs only. Also relocate the horns, cleans up the front end when looking through the grille. I'm sure there are others. How is the interior?
gilber33
Remove interior and shampoo carpets? Full bay detail? When I'm bored and want to work on my car but really have nothing to do to it, I just clean areas that usually wouldn't be cleaned. Like yesterday, had a snow day, removed my passenger axle, then took some soap and water and cleaned the underside of the engine and wiped all of the salt off everything. ;)
matt b
Shave and tuck the bay. It should be fairly cheap, it's the best time to do it and it'll improve the appearance.
Migilla
Remove and paint the trim and door handles.

Do it Also, you could paint the inside of the headlight housings (mattphi did a writeup) polish everything in the engine bay, and do an interior LED swap
DelawareT5M
Think I'm going to attempt the shaved bay... wish I had some VW friends who could show me some tricks any suggestions on how to do so? relocating key components doesn't seem so easy VWVortex Shaved Bay Thread edit: found my inspiration thread... yeah yeah I know Vortex is a bunch of douches but this thread is eye candy
JVC
sidemarkers are cheap. do a serious detail. like take hella time and do it up right. Polish some wheels, or paint some. maybe a wood floor in the trunk (should only be like 50 bucks) and then of course do hella preventative maintenance. -John

matt b
If I remember correctly, Mdlimy is shaving his bay now-ish too. He is. Cleaning up the wiring, relocating the battery, relocating the ECU, you have options.

Really? Some gorgeous examples but this one cracks me up due to its sheer impracticality.
BurgerBob
Polish anything you can get your hands on. If you've already got sandpaper and buffing wheels, all you have to get is polish and clear. Really time consuming, but not that expensive. hubbell
yeah yeah I know Vortex is a bunch of douches but this thread is eye candy so we're douches because you dont have enough skill to shave a bay? also, the only douches on vortex are the kids with the newer cars. lets not get into a car club bashing, because lets face it, Volvo clubs need all the friends they can get and VW people aren't that far off from Volvo people. side note, shaving a bay is not a good choice unless the car is purely for show and even then it is not worth the trouble IMO. (i've done it before, doubt ill ever do it again.)
