Water Pump

I have a 98 S70 with 172K miles on it. I noticed in an earlier post that someone said water pumps usually last a long time on these engines, but when they start to fail they make a hissing noise. If I put my ear down to the timing belt area, I can hear a whirring noise, but I don't know if it's just the timing belt making the noise. If I stand back a few feet even with the hood open I don't hear the noise.

Anyone have first hand experience with a failing water pump noise? Or am I just hearing normal belt noise.

you know when the last time the belt was changed? --- what trim level of S70? Signature! (nice work on the location!)

I'm starting to think you need to see someone abouth this little thing you've got going on...

A bit of whirring from that area is pretty normal from my experience. Lots of spinng bits. The power steering pump whirrs a bit, so does the alternator.

On the topic of the water pump though, a few people have talked about the groaning sound on startup when it's cold. It goes away very quickly and only returns when the car has fully cooled down. Most only experience for about block or two first thing in the morning.

I had a go through the engine bay with the hose-o-scope and it sounds like it's coming from around the bottom of the engine and I'm starting to theorize in the direction of the water pump...
