Xc90 V8...'06- Reliable?

Hello,

Hoping to hear from a few dealer techs regarding the reliability of the '06 and newer V8 (and the TF80-SC transmission). I haven't been a tech since early '08, and I worked for a low volume dealer at that. I know the '05 models commonly had balance shaft bearing failures, but was the problem 100% resolved for 2006? I am under the impression that a simple drain hole was added, but the bearing design is the same. Is an '06 or newer V8 model a safe bet?

Looking for a 90 for the Wife soon. Would feel safer going with a 2.5, but there are some good V8 deals to be had :). Can't afford something unreliable, so any insight is helpful.

Please advise, thanks!!

Joe

Joe, since there are not alot of xc90 owners here, i will chime in with what little that i know from reading the xc90 boards. I am no tech either :P

Early VIN 05 had the cb failures. have not read a report of the failures in the 06+ v8's, yes drain hole was added. seeing trans failures from some users on the V8's since they are getting up there in mileage.

Consensus is on vehicle to buy is the following

06+ 3.2

06+ v8

03-05 2.5t

Stay away from the T6 lol

They all have AWD/AOC failures, they all have angle gear sleeve stripped out, they all have sun roof drain clogging and causing $1000 repair to the yaw sensor(floods in the car under carpet), windows need to be reporgrammed, CEM failures, igition key cylinder problems, clunks moans and groands from the front suspension.

Budget:

$1000 for front suspension parts -control arms, ball joints, inner/outer tie rods, sway bar end links and maybe upper mounts/ bearings

$200(aftermarket rotors/oem pads)or $500(oem rotors and pads)

$125-850 for DEM/AOC failure if the AWD is not working

$0 for cleaning out the sunroof drain tubes

$?? for t-belt and pump for the non v8's (v8s have chains) mine was done already by previous owner

$?? for pcv mine was done already by previous owner

I have spent about $2500 refurbing/upgrading my xc90. at 151k she drive as good as my 01 91k convertible

I'm in the same boat. I would like to get one for the wife and I as well as for my parents.

I would really only go for the 03+ 2.5L though. We all know this motor, very easy to maintain and it get's pretty good MPG for an SUV!

Found one for 10K silver on black with about 100K that I need to go check out. Not a lot of the 2.5Ls out there, SO many T6s though! I feel so bad for the people that bought these vehicles.

My boss has one that his wife drives. No issues at all and they have had it for over a year. He would tell me if there was a problem with it, but I can ask him to see for sure.

She drives 50 miles a day for commute.

So there is no cure for those clunking noise beside replacing with new parts? What is DEM/AOC?

There is a cure. I look at it like this. These freaking SUV's are 2.5 tons, our regular volvos are 1.5 tons. They share the same hardware 75% of the time. WTF, they will wear out faster and the majority of the xc90 owners out there are older folks that relies on a dealers diagnosis. Dealers tend to mis-diagnose and over charge. Most VSers know what creaks and moans and groans on our cars. instead of fussing with it and considering my car had some things changed, i went ahead and changed it out anyways. Everywhere i looked in the suspension, one part or another was worn and would have needed to be replaced some time soon. instead of waiting for the failure, i started with a clean slate. Yes it cost a little bit of money, no i am not made of it but its better to invest into the car instead of it haunting you with continuous problems.

My suspension work was done before the 145k mark, now at 151k i have had 6000 trouble free, smooth riding, no clunking, 3" lowered, proper tire wearing, drives straight, and corners well miles. i learned my lesson with my other volvos. my first one i did it piece by piece and it was a never ending cycle, change a part, goto alignment shop. a few weeks later another clunk and it starts all over again. i feel the same way about brakes, changed it all out and start fresh.

DEM is a differential electronic module that controls the All wheel drive (AWD) system, haldex transfer case is also called AOC or active on demand coupler.

the haldex system is the same thing for audi's and vw's, it shares the same parts inside too. for audi/vw there are actually performance versions out there that change the power split from 70/30 to as much as 40/60 f/r split.

Volvo dealers like to just swap out DEM's for $2000, if you read the codes, its usually just the pressure sensor and fluid change.

Buy a Rav 4

Not gonna happen. Thanks though, for adding your typical helpful insight to an otherwise decent thread ...

Joe

I have a v6 2007 in the driveway right now, this little SOB moves out but it is a tin can. my mom-in-law complains she hears too much road noise from it all the time.35k and all we do is change the oil and a set of front brakes. Going to do a set of tires this summer but thats all because they are dry rotted.
