Svenska
Can anyone tell me what special tools I actually need to do a timing belt? Do I need Volvo tool 5204, the counterhold?
Three Fat Tigers
That tool is really nice to have, but you can do without it. One simple method is the remove the #1 spark plug and feed rope down into the cylinder so that the crank will lock against the head as it is rotated. Otherwise no other special tools are required, though the ones used to install the crank and cam oil seals are nice to have as well, they too are not required for that. I always check the valve clearances when ever the belt is off as it's easier to rotate just the cam by itself, makes the job go very quickly. Tools: Crank: 24 mm socket, torque to 77-78 ft lbs if you don't have an torque angle gauge. Tensioner: 15 mm, 37 ft lbs. If you have to replace the tensioner, you may well need another strong person to compress the spring while you insert the pin, otherwise you need a vise for that. Make sure the tensioner is all the way up against the block, tighten the nut, then back it off a turn or tow, before you release the lock pin as the pivot pin might get bent. I'll edit this later with more stuff, out of time right now.
FCP Euro
I did the timing belt on my 240 and did not need any special tools. If anything, they just make life easier.
