Clean Up After Heater Core

Hello everyone

I am getting ready to do my heater core and I am wondering what you guys did or used to clean up and dry out the carpet and padding that already has coolant soaked in? I haven't had this problem before and I didn't find anything using search.

Thanks!

When i did mine i just got me a bucket of water and a wet dry vac. i actually poured water in and vacuumed out the water until i was vacuuming out clear water. then on a hot a-- Hawaii day let the sun dry it out. it was a lot of work but i cant stand the smell of anti freeze.

Disconnect the connectors at the firewall, on ENGINE side.

Then apply some compressed air to one outlet, coolant will flow out the other outlet.

This way the heater core is dry for the job.

No mess!

I cut out the pad and rinsed, squeezed and repeated. Left it on the floor for the water to dry and then would see if there was still coolant, I would rinse, squeeze and then repeat the process over until I felt it was okay to put back in.

If you cut it out properly, when installing it back in, the pad will fit back in place like a puzzle.

i ripped everything out, soaked the carpets with a hose and let them dry. luckily, i had a friend bring down new foam from a local dismantler and cut it to fit. i made the mistake of not realizing how much coolant would pour out after pulling the old one out.

newbs...never misunderestimate us!

yeah I did it this afternoon and all went well. I didn't even have to drain the coolant, I only lost about 1qt into the garbage bag and then refilled when I was done. I gave the padding a good cleaning and I am going to see if I can get a small enough carpet cleaner to do the carpets in the 850.

This leads to my next question, do they make a small carpet cleaning machine or just use a big one and use the extension hose?

Thanks again!

why make so much more work for yourselves? Just disconnect the hoses in the engine bay at the fire wall and blow the lines out. super easy and no mess to deal with.

It's becuase there was already a mess since the heater core wasnt replaced in time. In my opinion it's very simple with the barbage bag method as it catches it all very nicely without being in the engine bay.....
