Tom93R1
I have had this intermittent hesitation problem for some time that only happened under a very narrow load range so finally last weekend I pulled out the crank position sensor from the top of the bellhousing and found the plastic tip was broken off. I could see the coil inside and it looked like a little corrosion from exposure to the elements was likely the cause of my hesitation. So I order one from O'Reilly for $55 and it comes in the next day. I install it and the sensor is slightly too long and rubs on the flywheel and dies after a few seconds. I return it and wait another couple days for the next one to come in. I install it and have the same problem. I figure it's just a flaw that the sensor they sell isn't the right one and maybe picking one up at the wrecking yard will be the better solution. I pick up 4 today, come home, put one in and it also rubs. 3 were from N/A cars and one was from a low pressure turbo car, all 4 are same part numbers and look identical. I forgot to look to see if there was some kind of spacer under the sensors, but I don't think there is. My question is this, is the flywheel on the 850R slightly larger than the flywheel on the other 850's? Or does this mean there is something wrong with my flywheel? I don't know much history on my car, there are bunch of things under the hood that look hacked so not sure if it had an engine swap at some point or what. Anybody else see this problem before? thanks
GP850T
all four of them rub??
sconeman
very strange. I've had the tip come of the CPS before but never heard of that. The flywheels should be the same. Is there damage to the housing where the CPS bolts on?
Tom93R1
All 4 do rub, I can see no damage to where the sensor mounts. That's why I suspect something with the flywheel. I made a very thin spacer and it was enough to just clear the flywheel but also just enough that the signal wasn't great and it wouldn't rev past about 2k. Maybe an irregularity on the flywheel. What I ended up doing for now is I cut the tip off one of the sensors and sealed it with an epoxy. It still rubbed a little but quickly wore down. bergmjs
Flywheel or flexplate? Are we talking about a manual or automatic, I'm assuming automatic which would mean it's a flexplate, not a flywheel. The flexplates are thin metal wheels with a crown around the edge with holes in it for the sensor, whereas a flywheel is a big 20lb piece of iron. So, I suppose it would be possible if someone messed up a repair or something and put in a bent flexplate or something.
Tom93R1
Sorry, you're right. Flex plate is correct. I tried looking into the hole for the sensor with a mirror and having somebody turn the engine but the view wasn't really good enough to see much. Hopefully my temporary fix works well enough to last until I have some other reason to pull the tranny. So far no hesitations and all seems well.
