***Fresh info and sound clips on post #7***

I am struggling to find a good combination of mid-muffler and rear muffler that is free flowing, not terribly loud and awsome sounding. I am running a home brewed 3" exhaust with an OBX downpipe. I have gone through 4 scenerios and am not happy with the sound.

First attempt:

no cat, Flowmaster to a glass pack ...result, medium drone, loud and raspy (Flowmaster sound)

Second attempt:

no cat, Magnaflow only ...result, drone heaven, insanely loud (Magnaflo sound)

Third attempt:

cat, Dynomax only ....result, low drone, decent tone and much quieter than the rest but did not have an aggressive tone (no sound clip)

Fourth attempt:

cat, Flowmaster again at the end of the pipe ...result, louder than the Dynomax but still not a great tone (no sound clip)

All these mufflers have that V8 tone, not what the Volvo should sound like. The Magnaflow sounds really good up top but just would not shut up at lower RPMs. I would like to know combinations that have a great tone but not rediculously loud. I am sure I need a two muffler system to do this, I just need to know what two mufflers would compliment each other.

If you didn't live in California I'd say just take the cat off. I hate inspection regs and emissions. I live in PA, just took a course on our regulations and they are retarded, inspections are just so the state can make money. If you pulled every car off the road about 3 out of five would fail so save me the they are for safety speech. I work on the other side of it (guess) and won't/refuse stop people for half the s*** they want us to. If you take your cat off all the bunny huggers get worked up. It was fun getting my balls busted for how many of the regs my car was in violation of  ( however still safe hmmmm). The cat is getting removed this spring we are a non emissions county (for now). Screw Al Gore and the baby seals. Magnaflow sounds the best. Currently I am running a TME.

if you can do something where you essentially make a test pipe into your exhaust you can have 2 of them made. one can be straight through and one can be with a cat. slap in the cat pipe when you have an emissions check then take it back out and put it in storage. Its like a lifetime cat basically. I was tempted to do this depending how my no cat inspection went over but so far 1 year down i have to try again in about 2 months

I am not worried about emissions. I already was sent to the BAR to be inspected. Took two trips but I passed. I bought a angled flange from a member and welded it onto the OEM conical exhaust. I passed then went home and swapped the exhaust out. When I made the exhaust I also made a cat delete pipe with v-bands so I can take it out whenever I want. Its currently in for noise sake.

After listening to the tones side by side I think I am favoring the Magnaflow so I will put it on tomorrow and then search for a resonator.

The only way I was able to get rid of the drone, was to go down to a 2.5 axle back and turbo style muffler. It is probably hurting my overall flow and hp number, but we d.d. the wagon and its pretty quiet inside while cruising. My previous setup was a full 3" with a magna flow straight through muffler, tons of drone all day, in fact got pulled over because of it, only time evar pulled over in the Volvo. Switched out the muffler to a 3" turbo style still too much drone.

My muffler guy said I had to "slow" down the flow to help control the noise, I might upgrade the muffler to a straight through style this summer, but Im sticking with 2.5 axle back. Hope my experience helps, also I'm running a race cat, I have to breath this air too.

a few things to consider is the style of muffler, not just the brand.

If your going with the three you posted i say go with #1.

however, Ill let you in on the plan for my wagon..........

I'm already running dual Exhaust off a V70R. so adapting this to fit shouldn't be that hard.

The Focus RS is a TURBo inline 2.5 5cyl. so the sound should be almost the same on our motors. AND I LOVE IT.

Only problem is getting it in the US, Forge use to sell em but they are now having issues.

It IS the same motor. Ford owned Volvo when they made the RS and just plopped the Volvo engine into it.
