Matt01
This is how you remove a 850 Manual Shift Knob First here is it intact. Second Remove the door under the handbrake then you stick your finger into the whole and hit the shift boot release. For the next section i made a tool out of 1/2" copper pipe to stick up and release the 3 clips of the boot. just cut the pipe in half and file down the tip so you insert the copper tool and force it upward with a vice grip. When it goes up under the clips, it takes a good shot to take the boot down Then you clip a good vicegrip onto the shaft about 1" below the knob Then you get a second vice grip and put a rag between the knob and the second vice grip. The pry up on the knob bob's your uncle the knob pops gently off.

Matt01
i did it because there was no good writeup on this.. honestly. I listened to other peoples advice and ended up breaking my ball seat (shown in photo) which holds the whole assembly down, its shown in last photo under console, it's all broken.. it was like 56$ it was pretty hard getting into first and second without it. thanks

Oreo931
You sure this method won't break the tabs off the shift knob? Seems like it would be better to use the same "tool" you did on the boot on the knob as well.
Matt01
i saw the thread on here about how to use the cj tool to remove it. cj's tool is much stronger than mine, and i was going to do it that way but my tool wasnt strong enough and bent when too much pressure was put on it.. I would have made it out of steel but copper did the job and was easier to cut. either way equal amount of pressure goes on the clips, judging by how hard these things are to get off, i cant see why the clips would break so easily. At least this way you can do it on-car without cutting it off. Some people have even had luck pulling the knob off, but its near impossible. i have not put the knob back on yet, but am 100% sure it will clip back on like new. you can buy a new shift knob at dealer for around 60$
Keep Calm Chive On
I have had a steel pipe cut and ready to do this but just like Adam wrote I was afraid to break the plastic tabs off. I wasnt as worried about jamming the split pipe up as I was with the cold weather. I figured the warmer the better so that the plastic is hopefully less brittle being its 13 years old. I intend to shorten mine a bit but figured I would just wait til some warmer weather. Now I know im being lazy for not reading but was your intention to replace the OEM shifter with a new different style or was it to replace with a better condition stock one? I have been interested in other shifters but havent done anything because of 2 reasons. 1- I havent found any shifter that looks good yet OEM ish, and 2- Unless its meant for our car originally I assume I would have to tap & die the stock arm which would render it useless of I didnt like the new knob
Matt01
im going to install a oem wood shift knob like what was on the manual t5-r. im not worried about the tabs, they dont break easily. if you look how the steal rod is you can thread at least 1" on the top of that arm before you affect the notches for the OEM shifter. Matt01
thanks alot just 1 change that im not sure of is the part about pulling off the knob.. if you are lucky you might be able to do it, if not, you'll break your ball seat like i did (56$ cad)basically the price of new knob and you have to remove the console to replace it. Guest Lulumike
My question for Matt01. How did you remove the ball seat? I too have a craked seat and had to buy a new one for about $51.00 Is it held down by something, do you need to turn it, does it need to be pried up rather than pulled off? Thanks
