Go Manual Or Stay Automagic?

Oh Crud...I go to the wrecker today and look what I found. What do I do? Everything is there, the car runs and was for sale, nobody bought so they put it on the lot. Everything is tight, external slave cylinder, in a 95 N/A.

What do I need? Shifter, trans, pedal, master cylinder? What else?

Looks clean! The manual makes it way more fun to drive. if youre gonna take it all:

Trans

Slave cylinder (may need to be replaced)

Master Cylinder (same)

Clutch Hydraulic line

Shifter cables + associated clips on both ends (may need new)

Pedals (I like to use the full set, some just take the brake and clutch pedals)

Shifter

And the trim on the center console that the shift boot snaps on to

IIRC thats all you need. Youll probably want a clutch kit and the flywheel resurfaced as well as new axle seals.

I'm going to go against the grain and suggest you stay auto until you can swap the diff too. Grab everything now so you have it but I refuse to swap my car until I can get a LSD at the same time. The idea of having to feather the throttle until third gear to keep one tire from roasting is a deal breaker for me.

It all depends on how you like to drive your car, the auto will spin the inside tire through a tight turn under power but in a straight line keeps them locked.

From personal experience, save yourself the hassle and get a brand new set of shifter cables (had my first used set snap on me, had to manual change it into 2nd from the engine bay and drive home with one gear - a new set makes everything smooth as butter) and master cylinder, resurface the flywheel, solid shifter cable bushings and get an R clutch kit. And spend about an hour on the contacts on the forks and make them as smooth as a baby's bottom. Does wonders for a nice and smooth pedal feel and initial bite.

Have a manual is a million times more enjoyable to drive and makes you feel more involved.

Downsides - sucks without an LSD if you're making any decent power and I found my wheel hop issue got a lot worse. You see in this video I made the fail of having an open diff and a manual. Inside tire spins when exiting the turn and disgusting wheel hop all the way through 2nd.

Swap it.

Hands down the best mod I've done to my car. You will never regret doing it.

I'm going to disagree with the "purchase new cables" suggestion. My swap kit had 120k on it and the cables were, and still are fine.

Get everything you can. Every bolt, clip, etc. You will reuse almost all of it.

I actually miss our automatic. The manual is really fun, but sometimes it would be nice to have car with an when you just want to have an easy drive. Plus the volvo auto really is a nice auto tranny.

The downside to the manual is traction. We are spinning high performance tires in 3rd gear. That might be the downside of too much torque though too :)

If I had to do it all over again, I probably wouldn't have chosen to blow the auto at the drag races and waited for it to die on it's own and then swap in the manual.

Our junkyard cables were fine btw.

Most likely due to me being Canada and our love for road salt. My first cables snapped like I said. I went to the junkyard, pulled another set and found they were rusted to pieces and the boots had dried up and had holes in it in the same spots. So I purchased a brand new set and slept well at night.

Sorry to semi hijack, just wondering Wagoneer855, what BOV is that? Sounds wicked :)

Turbosmart Kompact duel-port/duel-piston. Best BOV I've ever used.
