flyboy
01 V70 w/ 140K automatic transmission When at a stop with the car in drive, the car will clunk/jerk like it is trying to shift gears. Transmission service required message is on. Flushed transmission w/ 3309, helped some but problem came back. Anything else to check before taking it in ? Thanks, Dave
swedishiron
You could experiment with using Caterpillar TDTO fluid (thicker than regular transmission fluid) and mixing it with your 3309 fluid; A S80 T6 transmission rebuilder recommends mixing CAT TDTO tranny fluid with Dexron fluids for longer life for the GM sourced T6 tranny - I think the intent is to provide additional cushioning for transmission components. Look through the the P2 S80 threads at Swedespeed.com for more info for mix recommendation and weight of TDTO. I know the AW and GM trans are different animals but heck I would give it a try before replacing the tranny. You could also try some Lucas Trans Fix mixed with your 3309 -some people claim good results with it, read more at Bobistheoilguy.com. Otherwise I dont recommend any of the other Lucas snake oil products. BTW do you have a burnt smell to your fluid ? regarding CAT TDTO fluid... "Longer Clutch Life—Prolongs clutch disc life up to 45%." "Optimum Wear Life—Ensures long life and excellent performance for gears, bearings and friction disc material." "Engineered as an integral part of Cat power shift transmissions, most wet brake compartments, and hydrostatic systems. The TO-4 specification defines a minimum standard of performance for transmissions and drive train oils, but Cat TDTO is required to pass five additional Caterpillar tests. It is only through these tests and thousands of hours of field experience that Caterpillar is confident in saying Cat TDTO will deliver long life and excellent performance when used in Cat transmissions and final drives.Preferred lubricant for Cat power shift transmissions, and most final drives and wet brake compartments"
flyboy
No burnt smell, but the old fluid was pretty dark, about the same as when is was last flushed...60K ago. So much for "lifetime fluid". -Dave
Ihatespeedbumps
Any idea of what the codes are? This would help the "trans service required" message. 01-02 trans failure is VERY high. Has the TCM software been updated?
PyROTech
volvo should get its shit together and own up to the entire tranny situation, this isnt some random fluke, failure rate is insanely high for the 01's.
kwells114
Same issue with my V70 a few years ago. Get the software upgrade for the transmission! This will solve the problem. I now have 180K on the car, no tranny change yet. I won't be home for another week, I'll look up the part number for the upgrade and post it. It was around $100. flyboy
I thought the transmission software update was part of a recall item? I'll have to check my paperwork to see if it has been done. It seems odd the tranny would run fine for years and then crap-out due to a software issue. Band-aid ala the ETM? -Dave
Ihatespeedbumps
No recalls were issued pertaining to the trans or software. The software update isn't a bad idea (if it already hasn't been done) but don't think this is the end all cure all...
JRL
If you still have the original software with the stop neutral in, you're DESTROYING your transmission
MrWinkey
The whole issue here is programming ...tranny is only doing what it's told. Bring back cables and and vacuum solenoids..problem solved
kwells114
Found the number in my records on my hard drive. It is: s/w P/N 30646691 Since this s/w upgrade, it's been fine. Hope this helps you. Kev
flyboy
Just an update....for several days after the oil flush, the problem persisted, then went away and has not been back in a week. I will look into the stop nutral software issue. Thanks for all the advice! -Dave
JRL
Don't look, GET IT to remove that old software. It's going to RUIN your tranny if it already hasn't
98glt-5
Another thing to try is find a steep hill, and go in reverse up it slowly, like under 10mph, if you feel any binding or jerking the thing is toasted. Hopefully a tcm upgrade fixes it though.
