Pulling Junkyard Motor

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

As some of you all know the motor in my 97 855 glt is trashed. I spotted a hpt 2.3 engine at a local jy that i can get for about 200 including the 15g with 153k. The questions is i know alot of you guys like pulling the motor from the top vs dropping the subframe, but at the jy it seems like everybody drops the subframe on 850's to get the question out. My question is which way do you guys believe is easier? I have a engine hoist at my home and can use one at the jy, so is that still the best method? Here is the car in question btw

well if they will get it in the air for it its probably easier to do it that way, i took mine out the top, without taking the trans which was weird and i believe less common, most seem to take them both at once, and i had to take the harmonic balancer pulley off to make it squeeze through. I would think your best bet is seeing if they will lift it for you.

Yeah and you can purchase a 6 month warranty for about 20 dollars more.

Good deal.

I've already had my bad JY motor experience, the whole ordeal really broke my spirit when it comes to working on cars. If I were to do it again I'd get one out of a wrecked car, that way I'd know why it ended up in the JY.

When you get it out and home, do a compression test before you put it in. I wish I would have done that.

Does the wrecker have portable hoists that roll around? If not, drop it out the bottom. The only problem I see is that if you do drop it out the bottom it will not clear the body and you will have to raise the body to slide it out.

Why don't you test it at the JY. Bring a battery and compression gauge. I have even gone as far as bringing gas and firing it up.

It also helps to figure out why the car is in the JY> Ie bad driveline or accident etc...

In the end it's a roll of the dice.

Out the bottom FTW

ALSO the odometer is broken, FYI. Mileage may be off.

If you can somehow switch on the car (position II, motor not started), try to read actual mileage using socket A7 pictured here.

http://volvospeed.com/CheckEngine.php

How to read mileage off A7 socket:

-----------------------------------

1. Switch ignition on.

2. Plug wire to module A, terminal 7.

3. Push button 5 times.

4. When LED comes on and before it goes out, enter code 1-1-1 as follows:

- press button once while LED is still on

- wait for LED to go out and come on again

- press button once while LED is still on

- wait for LED to go out and come on again

- press button once while LED is still on

- wait for LED to go out and come on again

- read off the response, which will be the last three digits of the odometer miles or km

5. Repeat steps 3 to 4 but enter code 1-1-2 (that is, press the button twice on the last step); read off the response, which will be the first three digits of the odometer miles or km. Numbers that are zeros will read as 10 blinks.

Also, you may want to consider replacing the cooler lines before installing tho motor - so much easier to do when motor is out (they start to leak at 100k+).

if you'll end up with two cooler lines (one from yours and the other from the jy motor), you can get back $40 for them so that will be additional savings.

ALSO the odometer is broken, FYI. Mileage may be off.

So the odo gear broke, then someone hit the trip reset, and it never accumulated any miles again.

So the known history is that the timing belt was changed at 143k, then the odo stopped at 153k.

You could run a car fax to try to figure out what the mileage might be. Would you still want it if it had 253k, with 100k on the timing belt?

As these cars get older and less viable to fix, these parts fishing expeditions will become more necessary. It seems that doing all the steps (bring a battery, bring gas, hear it run) before taking on pulling the motor make sense.

Thanks alot guys you all bring up good points i will see if i can bring a battery into the yard and see if i can do a compression test before pulling motor out. I did not even think about if the odo is broken i will see if i can get a carfax and see the mileage via the method above. The thing that is scarying me is that the car has no body damage so it's kinda got me wondering why it is in the jy in the first place. I am going to get a open eye out though still there is a 98 s70 t5 motor at another jy across town but i have no idea on mileage since the s70's have an electronic mileage indicator. If any of you guys have a 2.3 pm me depending on how much it is i might just play it safe and get one where i know the history.

watch out for people with pepper spray.

Good point on the pepper spray flyfishing its why I am wearing protective goggles if I have to go to any yard in future. I would say its in the yard for two reason then, one being a bad tranny which you can check by fluid and looking for metal shavings. The other is broken t-belt which is easy to check.
