He has to draw the gear first before he can draw the tool that goes on it.

Ipd
Here's the rough draft of the tool, I'll end up doing the 'tick' marks like the other tool but first let's make sure there isn't a fundamental design change needed. The assembly

Volvo5.0
The hub/gear assy is not "keyed" to the camshaft, since the assy is attached to the camshaft with only the center 55 torx bolt. That means it may not always have the tdc mark in the same spot on the gear. Here's a picture of an intake gear, but I've seen the mark in several different locations on the exhaust gear also.... The tool will work as pictured, but the user may have to set the motor on tdc, lock the cams, remove the gear/hub assy THEN re-attach the gear in such a way that the tool tick marks are set at tdc. Then the cam gear could be marked (hammer and small chisel), and the original mark on the gear could be removed so as not to create confusion at a later date. How about the exact tool you have pictured, but with tick marks from one end to the other. It could be supplied with some kind of tdc indicator (peal and stick -0- mark). The user could install it onto the section of the gear that has the original tdc mark, attach the tdc marker at the tick mark closest to the original tdc mark, and your ready to rock. Ipd
Since the user will make there own mark, why have tick marks around the entire perimeter? Just make the mark on the cam gear right at the zero tick mark on the tool...
Volvo5.0
Absolutely, the user could "erase" the existing mark on the gear and make a new one.
Ipd
That was my thought since the OE gear mark is pretty random.
