Loud Bang From S70 Awd When Backing Up?

Hello all,

Have a 2000 S70 AWD, 144k miles. Has ALWAYS had four matched Michelin tires since purchased in 2005 (48k miles). In early 2009, the angle gear coupler splines finally gave up (125k or so), stripping the angle gear input shaft in the process. Replaced the angle gear with new Volvo unit, so it's only 2 years old. Applied Volvo "metal glue" (green Loctite) between the splines of the new sleeve and angle gear, so hopefully that will eliminate any play in the splines and prevent future wear (greased the trans side of the splines with Moly grease).

Here is my question. When this happened in 2009, I was backing out of a parking spot @ Wal-Mart (backing up and turning to left). The car made a single loud bang, which was felt in the body (felt like I hit another car hard). After that, the persistent grinding noise of the worn splines was present. Fast forward to Friday night. Backing out of the same spot (always park at the very end of the lot ;)), same conditions, and I heard a very similar single bang. This time though, no other symptoms afterward. Car has driven fine since, no other noises, so I'm not sure what to make of it. Freewheel unit issue, or unrelated to AWD system?

As said, angle gear and coupler are recent. Prop shaft was replaced in '08 (Colorado driveshafts reman), so the VC and rear axle are the only original parts...

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Joe

Hey Joe,

Sounds like a tell-tale failing freewheel unit sound to me. Around 175K miles my wagon's VC finally started to do this nearly everytime I started backing up and also upon hard acceleration, and in sharp high speed turns.

I replaced the VC with a new unit from Volvo (Tasca had a great price) and new screws etc. for peace of mind and that fixed it.

The only other thing to check is maybe if your parking brake shoes have delaminated and that caused the bang in reverse as the shoe pads broke loose. It's at least worth a look since you're talking 50 dollars in parts versus 1100 right?

Good luck.

Will,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, there are no shoes on the car right now :(. I removed them after the cables seized, figuring I'd replace them when I get around to doing the cables.

As for the freewheel unit failure, is it hurting anything? Its only done this twice in two years, but the first time took out the remainder of the coupler splines. Figure they were weak anyway, so the freewheel unit isn't entirely to blame there. Will it hurt to wait until it gets worse, or am I risking damage to the angle gear and/or coupler?

Thanks,

Joe

Tomorrow I will read through the AWD literature and see if I can understand everything better to try to answer if it is hurting anything forward of the VC. My instinct is that it's not but I don't want to speak misinformation. I have to re-read up on the freewheel unit.
