Surprised people are surprised. If the car is worth somewhere in the $2000-3000 range in the eyes of insurance, then an OEM headlight set, hood grille and paint easily get you to $2000. That said, I would take their check, buy it back and do the work myself for $200 in parts and $50 worth of product from paintscratch.com.

I agree. The car is worth FA in the eyes of the insurance. Once the cost of the repair is over 50% of the value you can pretty much say night night. Buy it back and fix it.

YEP>>This!...insurance companies go by book value. 850s/x70s aren't worth $hit as far as insurance is concerned..I don't carry full coverage on mine for that reason. whats the point? after the deductible and the subsequent rate hikes when you make a claim, its not worth it. I only have full coverage on the XC/90...

A lot of states don't let you buy them back anymore. Once its totaled its gone to auction as a parts car or the insurance companies part them out.

They found the cars are worth more in pieces then whole. Plus too many people have bought them back and made money off of it so....

Sucks btw. Hope it all works out

In MN you can still buy them back. They offered me the chance to do that with our 09 Prius, which i declined.

though you can buy it HERE if anyone else was interested.

I think our 08 Matrix went for like $1500 at it's auction and that was just the middle of march.

I am/was in the same situation as you. The issue is that the core support, the fiberglass piece that the radiator, lights, basically everything mechanical in the front if cracked costs $618 and is charged 5.3 hours to replace (@48/hr = $254), so just the core support is $872 ALONE. Add in a used headlight, wiper motor assembly that is another $320 or so. The next big ticket item is the hood, they are $259 used (but will need to be prepped for painting), or $629 new.

I've learned that these cars are not cheap to fix if the front end gets messed up. I blame it on those d*!n Danish designers....

You now have to decide total and buy back, or just move it, and that sucks...

BTW: Here is my situation in these pictures:

to subayai: couldn't you buy a used car for like 300 a complete beater but has all the parts you need. and then the only expense would be paint which could wait a while.

I could, but I got lucky, with the great condition of the car and performance upgrades like the Ohlin's, the adjuster increased the value of the car to support a $4,200 repair bill. In my case I could do all the work and then pocket the difference, but I live in Los Angeles (everything costs more), and I really don't want to spend that kind of time.

Get some legal help ;)

I didnt know it, but I could have gotten double what they gave me.

And could be living alot nicer due to state laws when she said take this or we take the car and you get nothing.

if your under 150k miles you should get at least 2,000. I got 1800 from my 260k miles. even when the adjuster and estimator gave me a 3k vehical value... <_<

Started at 900$.
