Ipd Vs. H&r

Recommended Posts

hey guys, another spring question! almost as revered as spark plug questions huh? so, my setup now is HD's w/ H&Rs. i was looking over old stance threads on here and loved the look of the iPd springs. i recently picked up some koni yellows but im torn as to which springs i should mount up.. now i like the stance of the iPds, but the rate of the H&Rs is good for me. im rolling on 18X8 225 35 profile so it's already kinda choppy having such thin sidewalls - im not looking to increase spring rate on the front. im also not looking to rub either. i have NO rubbing in the front (even full clocked), but do rub over certain bumps in the rear. i know the rates are lower in the rear esp on the H&Rs. so of course i've thought of cutting coils on the front and possibly do iPds in the rear (uncut, to match the front height, but also stiffen the rear rate so the spring wont compress as much and rub). have any of you guys mixed the springs and stiffened up the rear? if you've cut your H&Rs, how many coils? WITHOUT rubbing? i dont want the car "slammed" per se, but i do want it a tad lower than H&Rs provide, yet keep the rate and integrity of the H&Rs. i guess another 1/2-3/4" would be great, so i'd even it up in the rear with uncut iPds? good idea/bad idea? a tad forward rake is acceptable too. thanks fellas

i posted this almost a month ago and nobody said anything...?? im STILL wondering. i have everything i need but springs... i look @ my car and i want it lower, but i dont want my fillings rattled out and surely dont want to be rubbing.. remember im rolling on 35 profiles! what tire sizes are you guys running on iPd springs? and let's talk about rubbing issues...

p.s. Lucky, i miss you and love you bro! much respect

ipds..17" volans..215/45 Eagle gts...one coil cut from rear IPDs..no rub (with my kids in car), good ride, good handling on a 400 mile a week DD.. (Going to put 15mm spacers on rear) for cleveland roads, this is as low as I will go..I have hit the "skid-plate-bar thing" and the subframe mounts on a couple of grand canyon size potholes.

IPD's on 215/45/16's...really have to look out for potholes, etc now. Some of the smallest bumps that I didn't notice before make the WORST sound slamming over them now. Even got out once already to make sure I didn't break a wheel. The IPD's are stiffer than I thought they would be.

Can you post a level side picture of how your car's sitting? I have H&R's, TC front, Koni adj rear. I will be going to Koni adj struts soon and am debating the switch to IPD springs. Thanks! :D

Sure Aaron..gimme a day or maybe 2..its sits nice, no gap. not too much rake. if I didn't drive 2 older kids and a 5 yr old around in it (@ 300 lbs when all 3 are there) I would cut another coil (maybe) and level it out.

Nice, thanks a lot. Haha, if you're sitting nice and not scraping/bottoming out I would be happy with what you have. :)

I thought the Bilstein since they were high pressure raised the car. Would not the Koni's and the H&R give a similar ride height to the HD and IPD spring combo? I just installed the H&R and Koni and I am very happy with the ride and overall look of the car. With bad roads I am not sure how good the ride would be. The setup I am using is firm and very sporty, but very acceptable with the family in the car.

The HD's typically use the same piston length and stroke as the factory shocks, but in most applications, are valved a little stiffer.

Can't compare to the Koni or a Bilstein Sport, which both use a shorter piston length and stroke (which unlike the HD, are meant for use with lowering springs). They will feel different.

ok, so are you saying the piston length on the konis is shorter than the Bilstein HDs, making the car lower on konis and H&R vs. HDs and H&R? i know it's a compromise when you ask for "lower" but not "stiffer" cause usually lower = stiffer lol. i just dont want to bend a rim or bottom or rub.. isn't that what we all want? you guys are all running thicker sidewalls, thinner widths and smaller rims on the iPds than im planning to.

I am also running 18x8 but with 215/40/18. That was the largest size recommended on an 850. My understanding is the koni and h&r setup will be lower than HD and IPD setup.

I'm running 18x8 225/35 and running kw v3's and have hit some good potholes with no damage. The ride can get uncomfortable (well to my girlfriend, for me handling has come before comfort on all my cars so I guess I'm used to it) but if damage is your worry I've had no issues and the kw are Pretty damn stiff, though my mudflaps scrape on taller speed bumps.
