Xc90 Radio Malfunctioning

The stereo on my 2006 XC90 2.5T has decided to start acting funky. The radio has always had bad reception and given the occasional 'disc error' message, but otherwise worked. About two weeks ago while driving, I tried to turn the radio down but could not with either the knob on the head unit or buttons on the steering wheel. None of the controls would affect the stereo at all and I could not even turn it off. When I got to my destination and shut off the car/removed the key, the radio kept playing. After a couple minutes but before I could disconnect the battery so it would not run down, the radio shut off. The radio then worked fine from later in the day on. Now, the stereo will not turn on at all. It will read 'High Performance Sound' or whatever right when I turn the car turns on, but then does nothing no matter what buttons are pushed.

What can I do to solve this? Is it somehow caused by the antitheft system? I do almost all my own work, so feel I am competent enough to tackle this, but need a direction to go in. Do I have to ship the stereo out to someone for repair? Anyone particularly cheap/good? It's my understanding that you cannot swap head units between vehicles on these because of the computer. It would seem that it might be a problem beyond the head unit since it still is getting power with the car off. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Hello,

First thing I would recommend is a MOST system software upgrade (from the dealer). The MOST (Media Oriented System Transport) system consists of the radio, amp, CD changer, etc. All communication between them is done with fiber optics. I know most hate to go to the dealer for anything, but it may be as simple as a software glitch. If it doesn't help, then you know you have a bigger problem...

Hope this helps,

Joe

U can have a short or open in the most system. Same symptom happens if the most system fiber optics dont complete a complete circuit. Ie signal doesnt go thru all compenents. Ive seen the am/fm antennas go bad a lot on xc90's causing ur symptom

I live 3+ hours away from the dealer, so that is another disincentive to spending the time and gas to go to them. I have been talking to a tech at the dealer and he seems to think it is a mechanical fault, not a software issue. If I get over that way I can try the update, but he seems far less than confident.

Could my antenna/tuner be causing all of these problems, or are you saying just the reception problems?

The dealer should be aware if there is a recall on the ICM, right? Is it something they would just take care of since the battery being drained seems like a safety problem?

Thank you very much for the replies!

ICM software recall was to prevent discharge of the battery, because the thing never powered off. Hardware fault is also a possibility, but this is the best place to start. You can call your local dealer with your VIN number and they can tell you what recalls are still open.

I called the dealer with the VIN and he said there were no open recalls. I actually called two different dealers since they are all 3+ hours away, and the one said he has never heard of anyone having any problems with their XC90 radios. What the heck?

Ya i see problems all the time with the am/fm tuner causing bad reception and radios shutting off. Ive also seen shorts in the can network shutting off everything. Think the am/fm tuner is a good start but they are expensive. Id recommend diag since it could be anything. Oh ya check fuses first also before taking it in

Recalls and technical service bulletins are two different things. There are bulletins out for the XC90 radio's for MOST system and IAM upgrades.
