Snabb T5M
I finally found a video with the sound my turbo makes on throttle lift off or when shifting. In the video, its the piccolo type sound, and you hear it right when he shifts from 1st to 2nd. Is this compressor surge and I'm assuming I should be concerned? I'm running a Forge piston style CBV on my 18T. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuNTnA5A2Fo
TRACStar
Yes, the valve you have may not be able to flow enough. Best solution is to use a blanking plate and put a BOV on the piping.
850T5M
Could a leaking or sticking stock CBV do the same thing? My car makes a similar sound with the stock 15g. It flutters instead of gives a linear sound. It seams to be fluttering for longer and longer as time goes by. Happens only on throttle lift tho, not erratically. That sound is exactly what my turbo is doing too. Doesn't do it all the time though. Only higher gears and when I don't shift, but I just accelerate till it builds boost, and then let off the gas, and it will make that noise, but not when I shift. And I know my CBV is not torn. But it never leaks boost, it only flutters when I lift the throttle...only thing is that it doesn't hold 15PSI, maybe thats why lol So surge is the weird "higher" pitch noise that it makes, or the flutter itself? What do you mean, or the flutter itself? Surge and flutter are caused by two different things. If it flutters every time you change gears, or let off the throttle, then your CBV has a hole in it. The CBV in my 15G was torn, and would flutter all the time.
850T5M
Sorry I stated that wrong, my car makes a similar noise (flutters), except its less high pitched. I guess I'll just see if it makes the same noise when I switch over to my new angled 16T with the IPD HD CBV :S
Mesoam
no that is not compressor surge... this is The only volvo I have seen a video of this happening on is Kerplunkee's beige wagon when he was dyno'ing a 19t redblock setup.

Right, we determined in the MWC thread that what we were dealing with was not compressor surge, but boost surge on low boost and partial throttle when we let off the gas. Joe actually posted that video to demonstrate what compressor surge is and we agreed that is in no way what we are experiencing.
