Code P1017

This morning I started my car and everything seemed fine until my engine started to violently thump...I read the code and gave my P1017; malfunction control fuel and air, auxiliary emission controls metering. I then stated the car back and the thumping was gone. What could this be? And is the problem gone? Should I just clear the code or should I bring it to volvo?

The only thing I could think of is that I got some water in the exhaust last night and that it froze up...???

Could've been a weird fluke in the Mass Airflow Meter. Carl Duke (Fort Collins, CO) was telling me a couple weeks' ago that all the MAFs in the 94-99 850s/70s seem to be going right now. He's changed a lot (didn't give the number) in the last month alone.

Is the code gone? CEL still on?

Thanks for the reply, the light is off, the code could still be read though (I figure that's normal). Everything seems like it's running fine now.

Like a month ago my engine light came on and had my maf replaced...

It just scared the hell out of me, my volvo was like choking too death! Plus I don't really understand these things too well so...I'm not sure if I should just erase code and carry on. Or should I check it out at the dealer?

Thanks again,

Mikie

Is the end of the MAF connector tied down securely with a plastic tie?

Loose MAF connections can cause your problem, and be intermittent.

Well from the TB hose were the maf is (I believe...lol) the wires from the connector goes down to the air box cover were there is a clip and it's secured there. I don't know if that's what you mean but there are no plastic ties...but it seems like it secure.

I wouldn't be half suprised if it wasn't water in the fuel....We have had

trouble with that in my area this year . Plus seeing your location I know it's much colder up there. You may clear the code if you wish ........ if the light is now off,it's fine...you may want to add some fresh high test fuel and a bottle of dry gas if you like...certainly will not hurt....Many times we forget the basics in this industry...If the CEL light returns ,You may want it checked out... B)

Yeah I think that must of been the problem...considering I left the tank fairly low a few times...I try the cleaning that out with your suggestion.

Any suggestions of brands of high test fuel/dry gas???

Thanks alot guys,

Mikie
