Oil Cooler Q

Awesome, Until today i thought i had one of those sandwich coolers. So an oil cooler upgrade is pretty easy?

If you go with some sort of aftermarket cooler the hardest part will probably be plumbing in the lines which isn't all that difficult at all.

There is also an option to switch to a 99+ style oil pan which has the oil cooler all in one. There is zero confirmation that going this route is any more efficient than what you have now. Some choose to do it so they don't have to deal with leaking oil cooler lines, oil mixing with the coolant, etc.

Cool. Thanks for the info. I noticed i was leaking coolant while working on the PCV system.

Sure thing, lookforjoe has a nice thread about the 99+ transition in the Performance section if you want to learn more about that.

Could you tell where the coolant was coming from?

it was seeping from the crimp seam by the upper hose.

At the radiator or thermostat? It is VERY common for our radiators to develop hairline cracks where the upper hose secures to the radiator. It's almost a sure as stuff waiting game if the car still has the original radiator.

If what I described sounds like your situation then I would plan on a new radiator. Just take it easy on the worm clamp pressure and the new one will last as long as the car. (More than likely.)

You could try your luck with an aftermarket radiator, fitment and longevity might suffer big time though. Rule of thumb is either Genuine/OEM (Valeo) /Nissens. Personally I would go with OEM, it's a pretty important component.

I've heard of a lot of people having good luck with the Nissen radiators, could save ya a few bucks......

I just dumped a ton of $ into my 242 and have next to nothing for the 850 at the moment, ive learned not to let a rad go so something is better then nothing.

You could def. give it a shot. Aftermarket radiators are just a gamble but sometimes you make out ok. :)

Worse case scenario you end up spending money again and get some experience swapping them.

That's cool, it is a pretty big gathering. I'm on the fence about going still.

When it comes time there are quite a few good radiator how to's floating around. Check out the pinned threads in this maint. forum.

I ended up getting a rad form advance. It was $202 but with some google searching i found a coupon code to get it down to $150 and ordered it as an in store pick up. While i was at it i ditched the AC condenser and replaced some hoses i couldn't reach before.

I did notice that the tabs the hold the intercooler to the bracket pretty much fell off while i was working on it so i sandwiched it as well as i could with the brackets and added some bits of foam take between the rad and inter-cooler so they dont rub.
