940 Gl Sedan

Hi guys

Problem with our 940, the boot/trunk won't lock shut. By this I mean the catch doesn't slide across when you apply downwards force on the panel, regardless of how soft (or hard) you push it. The catch itself still works, as you can trip it with a screwdriver, but the handle doesn't open the latch. I had the interior trim off the boot, and the pushrod from the handle is still attached, but no movement from said latch.

Thats all the information that I can remember, but feel free to ask for more if you have an idea of how to fix it. (And quick, racetape isn't a very good security feature, especially when it is blue on a silver car...)

I did a little search on this topic, and I haven't been able to come up with an answer.

Cheers guys

Certainly a very uncommon failure, I don't think the latch mechanism can be serviced other than to replace it.

You say the latch works, you can trip it with a screwdriver but then you cant open it with the handle, so then how are you resetting the latch, or is the latch now stuck in the closed/latched position (trunk lid open)? At least with the handle not working, it's good that it won't latch with the lid closed as otherwise how would you get it open to work on it?

I assume you turned off the trunk light as the switch is integrated into the latch and wont automatically turn off if not latched.

I think that is the key to the problem actually. All that is needed to reset the latch is to pull the screwdriver back through the latch and it opens. Took it to our friendly mechaninc this arvo, and he has deduced from what I have told him, and having a poke around himself, that the latch itself (the black unit) has broken, and needs replacing. Ordered a new one, and will put it in after the weekend.

Thanks for the help, I have been lurking on this forum for a number of years, just to glean little bits of info here and there.

My family are dyed in the wool Volvo-ists; on top of the 940, we have owned I don't know how many 240's we have owned, there is a 242GT in the family, my parents drive a S60 T5 and just got rid of the S80 T6. I don't mind them, you simply cannot kill them.

I fixed the problem today, by replacing the whole catch/latch unit. It took me less than an hour to remove a working one from a parts car, remove the broken one from my car, and put the new one into my car. Cost me nothing, mechanic gave me the latch and the tools I needed to get the job done :D
