850r Clutch

I am about to order my clutch for my manual swap.

Question:

Looking at FCP they have a clutch assembly (pt# K70213-01 )that is specific to a T-5R (Engine# B5234T5). Now the engine I have in my wagon was pulled from a T-5R and is a B5234T5. But, the transmission was pulled from a 95 N/A so the tranny and flywheel are not from a B5234T5. Is this the correct clutch assembly?

That's not the 850R clutch but it is a good clutch from everything I've read. It came on the '95 T5-R and then in 96/97 the 850Rs had 272218 which is what most of us use for a performance Volvo clutch.

I remember Swedish Mike once saying that the T5-R clutch is good but holds a bit less power than the 850R clutch. If your car is stock or has some basic power upgrades I'm sure that the T5-R clutch is going to be just fine.

Tasca Volvo usually has the best prices on Genuine Blue box parts. 188 bucks is what they have listed for this clutch. However, FCP includes the release bearing with their kits whereas I don't believe that Volvo does so you'll have to buy that separately + pay for shipping.

I recently got an 850R clutch from TASCA. It is quite a beefy clutch compared to the stock T5 unit it replaced in my car. FCP combines the clutch and bearing as a package. It's a good idea to replace the release bearing when you do the clutch. If you buy from TASCA you will buy the release bearing separately. Nevertheless, the price for both is still lower at TASCA based on my comp shopping than FCP. Shipping was reasonable and parts arrived in a week.

What? Now I am confused. I am searching for prices and while checking IPD's I run across this jem of a comment...

Yea as said above, IPD's site is just completely wrong. That part number 272218 is THE clutch kit for the 96/97 850R. It's what came with the car. Period.

All of the single mass clutches will work with all of the 850s - fit isn't an issue, it's just about the power levels each can handle. What I mentioned above was that there is also a 1995 T5-R clutch kit that only came on that car which supposedly handles power pretty well, is the same price as the R clutch kit and was the one that you had originally come across. I was trying to say that if you get that one it'll work just fine too.

Get it from Tasca Volvo - you'll save at least 120 bucks over IPD.

Thanks guys, I really needed that reassurance.

Checking the price for the clutch and throw out bearing Tasca is cheaper but with the free shipping and VS discount it might be cheaper to go with FCP. I have not made the call yet.

Just outa curiosity, what makes the R clutch (272218) stronger than the normal T5 clutch (271494)? Does it have a stronger pressure plate? bigger springs? the clutch material is bigger/harder?

I have the normal T5 clutch and a regret putting it in lol :(

I was looking at pictures and they look very similar.

My clutch holds my 15psi fine in 4th gear and probably 5th (haven't tried really), but between shifts I can feel it slip a little (when pushing it). Its not strong enough to actually chirp the tires for example between 1st and 2nd (it slip instead).

*******UPDATE********

IMPORTANT INFO:

The new clutch arrived and suspicion set in as I started looking at the part numbers. When I bought the clutch from FCP I did based on the part number # 272218. What came was a K70212-01. If you look on FCPs website this clutch shows up as on OEM number 272218.

I wanted to be 100% sure I got the 850R clutch. I called them they did a lot of cross referencing then said its not the 272218 and that the 272218 is not currently on their website and it has to be ordered from Volvo.

HMMMMM, Glad I asked. They are taking care of it. You really need to call when you order, dont go on the website or you may not be getting what you think.
