Turbo Hot Side Problem?

I just swapped over my 15g for a 16t with an obx exhaust. After going for a "spirited drive", I noticed the turbo wasn't glowing red, but white instead. It looked like a it was frozen, almost like ice was forming, but it was of heat obviously lol...

The car is running catless and was only boosted at 7psi. I did 2-3 pulls with it, which I find the car didnt pull very hard. It seemed like I needed to push harder on the gas for the boost to kick in, and when I let off the throttle, the CBV hasnt been making a Swoosh noise. Car was not puffing any smoke at all.

Any ideas?

Whats the white stuff, am I running crazy lean?

The DP was just gold color, no white on it.

What kind of spirited driving are you doing to get the turbo glowing red or white? I go to the dragstrip and run back to back and I've never had my turbo glowing red. Are you running for miles on end at WOT?

White would typically be indicative of leaner conditions.. Not sure why you no longer hear the CBV - unless it just cos the exhaust is much louder/deeper note? No changes to the air box or inlet piping? Did you check the diaphragm before installing the turbo? Have you checked the vac line from the CBV to the vacuum tree?

I did 2-3 pulls from 2nd to 3rd gear, nothing major. Car is only boosting 7psi at the moment too. Im gonna reset my ecu tomorrow cuz i forgot tonight. Could it have something to do with coolant or oil feed?

The cbv i swapped for a hd ipd one over the winter while the turbo was lying around. Vac lines looked ok. No changes un any of the intake track either.

which color spring did you use w the hd cbv? if u used the stiffest one maybe vacuum is having trouble opening it w u only running 7 psi....do you hear any odd noises from the turbo when letting off while ur 7 lbs are in the system indicating the pressure not being discharged

just a few thoughts, im surely no expert lol

That wouldn't cause the turbo to run extra hot like that.

My turbo would glow red after long highway pulls, perfectly normal since the egr's get into the 1800 range at WOT, glowing white seems a little weird, are you colorblind by any chance :P

I have the lighter spring installed. Doesnt seem to make any weird noise at all. Just on my 15g the noise was pretty audible, and now i dont hear it at all. Could it need more pressure to make noise?

Could there have been paint on the hotside :s

It was black when i got it. I'll go check it now that its cold. See what color it is

I'm gonna go check it in a few minutes, I doubt it was paint, but maybe...I'll see if the white is still there and if it flakes off. The turbo wasn't "glowing" white, it was just white lol...looked like when there's salt that sticks to ur mags or paint during the winter.

Went outside to check. Turbo is still white. Its a powdery residue tho, im gonna assume its paint for now until I drive her again and fix all my exhaust leaks/install my wideband.

Here's some pics for anyone who has an opinion lol

i would just return your boost to normal, might make the cbv more audible since ur only running 7 atm which is a little, lower than the softest spring is suggested for

having run a dieing 16t for months and then going to a 40K mile 15G i can tell u your 16t should be a little more audible than your old.......my old 16t in its youngest days was pretty damn loud, truck turbo like u described lol
