EVL WAGN
wait, are you saying it doesn't go past 3.5k RPM in drive? 1999+ from what i remember does not rev past 3.5k RPM in park/neutral unless the car is a manual. This is true with my 00R as well. It will not rev past 3500 in park or neutral as a safe guard. Does it do the same thing when you drive it Dan? I'd change out the MAF and have the dealer see if the ETM recall was performed on it too.

I only drove it for 5mins,to get it to my house. When i hit the gas to see what it had,it would go into limp mode and sound a little (chitty chitty bang bang) and just remain at the same speed. If i don't get on it,it drives fine. It's a good thing that it has the safe guard...i was getting worried about that.As soon as i register it,I will check on the ETM
Scania
You can't free rev it. None of them will let you do it. Safety aspect of it. Didn't read through your whole thread but it doesn't sound like your lifter's where pumped up. Nice find. . . . .Good Luck. .....................Dave

My money is on the ETM. The previous owner probably had no clue that Volvo issued a massive service recall on the ETM. Good luck buds and keep us posted. Dan A
It's definitely in "limp mode" for sure. My money is on the ETM. Good luck buds and keep us posted.
I would think so too except for the fact that he said it drives fine under light load. If it is in limp mode due to etm, it basically shuts down the etm and your car is pretty much undriveable. I'm wondering if it is a plugged cat? Try unbolting the exhaust after the turbo and see if it is any better?
R MOOSE
Just changed the oil yesterday, and the R is way more quiet I did notice that in park,I got the RPM's up to 4k. Also, the vac line coming off the top of the manifold goes flat when the car is running...like something is clogged.I already replaced that line. It's just that one line that does it,the rest are fine. P.S. there was about a half inch of mud (no joke! oil and dirt)at the bottom of the oil filter cap! Will tinker with it somemore today.

R MOOSE
Also noticed on first start up,it cranks over for about 6sec,and when it starts,it dies. But then 2nd time starting it,it starts right up and runs fine.Took it today to put gas in it and noticed it hesitated for a couple of secs then was fine.Still can't get on it though. burnout8488
I am taking delivery of a '99 S70 AWD tomorrow that has the same problem. It won't rev over 4000rpm when floored. Just sticks there. Has a P0103 MAF sensor code, no other codes. I have a spare MAF sitting here I'm going to try on it tomorrow. If it fixes it, I'll let you know and hopefully that will help you fix yours! Mossback
MAF and ETM will do these things,I would start with the MAF then look into the XeModex TB is the problem persists. I just spent a year looking at everything but the MAF (which wasn't causing the lean CEL according to the guides)it was the MAF causing rev stuttering, jerkiness, intermittent boost etc. (it was wierd though, I got my MAF FOR <$100 from a local Bosch dealer so it wasn't so bad)
