Exhaust Flex Pipe Leaking

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I was at the muffler shop and they told me the Exhaust Flex Pipe is leaking.

The manifold itself is OK, just the flex pipe that leaks.

So my options are:

1. Flex Pipe ONLY (Scan-Tech....yeah I know!): $60

- But it needs to be welded etc.

- Hoe long does this last?

2. Whole Manifold Unit, PN 9471934:

- Volvo OEM is $416.

- Scan-Tech is $200:

Any advices?

The OBX header is a pretty cheap alternative for a brand new unit and I hear the pipes are slightly larger too.

I would trust an OBX exhaust part over a Scancrap part any day. My OBX full exhaust has been holding up perfectly, all my Scancrap parts die very fast.

My car has EGR, could you give me the correct link to OBX item?

Also: the OBX Kit comes with the gaskets: How GOOD are these gaskets?

I hate to do the job twice because of the gaskets!

Much appreciated!

My car has the SAS system.

I just noticed the OBX header has no input for the SAS system.

I'd like to keep my car stock (I know about all that SAS delete etc. but emssion testing is an issues).

Is there a way to install an adapter in the OBX header for the SAS?

Drive to an exhaust shop prior to installing it and ask them to weld a bung in wherever you like.

Thanks,

This is my EGR setup.

You can see the EGR pipe feeds into the manifold at the blue circle.

So the muffler shop can install a bung there?

Whoa, you said SAS, get your emissions system straight  .

If you really want it accurate take the old header off and bring it with you to the exhaust shop to show them. A good welder should be able to put the bung anywhere.

Your car doesn't have EGR. No 1998 x70 has EGR. That is a picture of the SAS valve. Follow the fat black tube, it leads to the air pump.

Bottom line is you have 2 basic options here, either have OBX make it work or have a local welder make it work:

1) Call OBX, talk to them. They can probably make one that ships all ready to go for your car.

2) Go to a muffler shop, talk to them. They will tell you what they can do. Best is bring the old manifold with you, or drive the car there.

Hi bergmjs,

Sorry I have a brain fart to day LOL!

Upon closer inspection, the OBX already has the bung for the SAS (RED Circle)>

I am definitely going with the OBX!

After some more research it appears to me that:

#1. Flex Pipe + Muffler Shop labor = $150

#2 OBX part alone = $210....but further research results in mixed result: some are happy and some are crappy LOL. the Honda people hate OBX Flex for whatever reasons.

I finally gave in and order the Volvo OEM Exhaust Manifold from Waltrip Volvo in Tennessee for $360 + $15 shipping (plus gaskets :$35 for 5 +1 gaskets) because:

- I know the OE Exhaust Manifold will fit.

- I know the OEM Exhaust Manifold will last at least 10yr/100K, and I plan to keep this thing for another 8 years or so.

- And if I need the cat later, I can use something like Bosal and it still fits to the 4-bolt arrangement.

After all, $400 is not that bad for something you only spent every 10y/100K miles.

Still better than a car payment!
