The 901 will run fine without the Dolby box, it just won't have surround. If you DID add the Dolby module, you'd get some surround effect from the rear speakers, but it wouldn't be anything to write home about without the center. And the center in an 850 is problematic, to say the least. BUT - the real question to me is, is the 901 better, even without the Dolby? Hell Yes! Drop that baby in and Enjoy.
