Strang Electrical Problem

Recommended Posts

This is very strange and I have looked and cannot find anything that approaches this on a 850. Ours is a '94 N/A w/ just over 200K miles...runs great!

Issue started with intermittent center brake light failure bulb lighting up on the dash. I have checked and replaced the bulb several times...it works sometimes and then not...and the bulb out light on the dash light illuminates when braking.

This week, things progressed to strange. If you turn the left turn signal on, the bulb out light for the center brake light would also blink and the blinking would slow down. And now, the regular brake light illuminator on the dash faintly blinks on and off as well, but only i the headlights are on....still the center brake light bulb out illuminator (on the dash) blinks with the left hand turn signal and the center brake light is not on outside of the car. Step out of the car to see what's going on and the rear running lights are blinking along with the turn signal light...as well as the regular brake lights (not the center one), but these, just slightly... The headlights are not dimming with the blinking and the front turn signal light illuminates properly. All of the issues are at the back of the car. I'm thinking something is sending 12V to the ground for all of these lights back there, but where? Right turn signal doesn't do any of this. I have looked at all wiring, cleaned all contacts, checked fuses, cleaned and inspected wires in and out of the fuse box as well as the light control unit right behind and below the tail lights in the rear of the car too. Nothing seems to matter.

Anyone had something similar happen? Is there a solution? Don't think my son will get pulled over with this situation, but it is frustrating as I have spent hours now w/ a volt meter in hand trying to see what's going on and can't figure it out. As I mentioned earlier, all contacts are clean and I don't see anyway where I'm sending voltage back to the ground, but I still think I am somehow. Btw, does the bulb in the center brake light have 2 protrusions or just one? The one I replaced originally had 2 bumps on it....so that's what I've been using this whole time...

Sounds like you may have a funky ground for the left side tail light and third eye.

Have a look at the ground bolt between the left tail and the trunk latch.

Loose, corroded - a bad ground like there could easily be your problem.

check your owners manual for the right bulb.

Have you tested your battery and alternator? wonky things start happening with a insufficient power

Thank guys- the battery is plenty powerful. And wiggling the ignition key made no difference. I'll check the ground bolt as described. I'll also check the owner's manual for the right bulb...my son has the car at his work right now so I'll need to wait until he gets home.

Just checked the bulb and it's using the right bulb w/ 2 nubs...

Disconnected both of the ground wires and sprayed with contact cleaner and tightened them back. After this, all seems to be back to normal.

I'm actually surprised if this fixed it. We'll see if the problem rears its ugly head again.
