Recycling The Old Radiator

Recommended Posts

I have the "old'" radiator that was leaking a bit of water, and because my swap is close I was wondering if anybody did this before?

Cut the big radiator somewhere in the middle to use only the side with the engine oil connection, that I will try to fit on the right corner (passenger side).

Clean a bit in between the new big radiator and intake manifold also a god point for better air flow .

Any Idea for where to "slice" the radiator??

Suggestions and links are WELCOME!!!

Many thanks in advance to al VS members.biggrin.gifbiggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

Ok. So Let me get this straight.

Your Current Radiator is Leaking.

You Have A Manual Swap in the Works.

Rather than buying a new Auto Radiator Now, and a New Manual Radiator Later (in the close future)

You want to Purchase the Manual Radiator and install it for the coolant.

and Hack the old Auto radiator for the Oil Cooler?

And Jam Hacked Radiator into Engine bay, until manual swap is complete?

Just get a manual rad and put in an external cooler.

If you smash the end tanks off the rad, you can take out the oil coolers but its really not worth it and its going to look like shit.

The current OEM Volvo radiator part number is the same for manual and auto.

You just leave the plugs on the drivers side where the auto tranny hoses

would connect if you have a manual (just R%R'd the radiator on my T5M).

NOPE my actual radiator is one year old and work flawless,

Yes I have the swap coming soon,

I just want to use the manual rad. and fabric(cut) a small one just for the engine oil lets say like the C70smile.gifsmile.gifsmile.gif

I already have the manual rad., just trying to do something different BUT NO GHETTO !

Thanks for the tips

Thank you, thats I want to avoid all the plugs and pipes in front of the manifold.

There's no pipes, just two plugs. Just keep your current radiator, remove the trans fluid cooler lines and plug the holes. If it makes you feel better than grind the barbs for the trans fluid down flat. There is no difference between the manual and auto radiators for the 850.

Trying to cut apart the radiator is just a bad idea. I'm not sure of the routing of each fluid within the radiator but you don't want to take a guess. Not to mention it would destroy it's structure integrity and remove a lot of fin material reducing its efficiency drastically.

The radiator has routs for oil, coolant, and trans fluid, just leave it that way.

If you really want a separate cooler, buy an external cooler that was designed to be that way.

They only sell "auto" radiators now, if you use it in a manual you just leave the plugs in place. I do however believe there is a difference in turbo vs. NA radiators, in that the turbo rad. has an oil cooler and the NA rad. doesn't.

So... just buy a turbo radiator and it has a built in oil cooler.
