turbomike89
Whats up guys? Hope everyone is doing ok. A couple quick questions. 1. My moms turbo in her 98 xc is shot and money is tight so im looking for the cheapest alternative. So my question is is what turbos can i use? I found a 15g at lkq that seems good. That leads me to the next question. How will i know exactly if its good? I looked in on the hot side and it was dry, it didnt have any shaft play up/down/side to side/ but it had just a LITTLE back and forth the length of the turbo. Is that ok? I have a genuine rebuild kit i was going to have it rebuilt anyway. And lastly, her car needs a dipstick, will a dipstick from a 850 turbo work? i mean the tube and everything. Thanx for the help guys!!
Keaton85
If the pcv isnt done then do that and you should be all set. Very very rare to have a bad turbo...

turbomike89
it smokes really bad and you can actually hear the turbine shaft vibrating when you get on it. It only smokes when you get on it then let off the gas. its a pretty big puff of blue smoke. id just like to know what turbos i can use. Im pretty sure a 15g will work. And if the turbo i mentioned in my first post is still good
Keaton85
Still sounds like crankcase pressure, but anyway, i would still with a 13g or 13t since they are supper cheap used and you wont gain anything from just adding the 15g. $50 shipped for a 13g is all i would pay. turbomike89
ok.... So i stand corrected.. I bow to my fellow volvo nerds. lmao. So i pulled the downpipe off today. (Hot as hell). And there is NO shaft play at ALL.... And the oil leak has gotten to the point where i cant drive it at all. Its coming out of the filler cap so bad its filled the valve cover and will leaf out the back of the valve cover and on to the manifold. I REALLY need help guys. The Pcv box has already been replaced. What else is there? I havent done the nipple yet but will that make the oil leak THIS bad??? HEELPPP!!! Zappo
When you did the PCV system, did you replace all of it or just the oil seperator box? Check the condition of the PTC valve that the PCV hose connects to. I have seem them closed up before from gummed up oil.

Zappo
just the box. And the ptc, is that the nipple on the intake hose?? Yeah. You should also make sure the hose isn't plugged either.
turbomike89
The thing is, that hose to the nipple is broken. i need to replace it.. so that pressure would be being relieved.. IM thinkin the port that the box is bolted to is plugged?? IDk... Its starting to piss me off... I know when you pull the box your supposed to stick your finger in the hole and clean it out. i did.. But maybe not good enough??
