depends what your going for. 17's allow for a little more rubber between the wheel & the road which equals a slightly smoother ride. Im from NY and our roads are like driving across the moon so I have never felt the urge to go above a 17" wheel. Plus for how expensive tires are these days I think the difference in cost between 17" & 18" tires along with the potentially lower wheels is enough to keep me at 17s. To answer your actual question... 18x8 will "fit" but you might need some fender shroud trimming and potentially rolling depending on what size tire you choose. The more important question are what are the specs on the wheels? Offset is key in regard to this and its probably 43-38mm. The larger the wheel the more you need lower offset. Too much & you have to trim your outside shroud & roll those. Too little, you rub the inside of the wheel well & shroud

The larger you go the more potential for drive line bind. I dont know exactly how it works with Volvos but I've lifted many jeeps and the larger tire/wheel combo the more gearing comes into play because it takes more power to rotate larger / heavier wheel combo. Seeing as most people feel that the P80 AWD system is archaic I would be curious if it has ever cause any problems to prematurely fail that are already destine to prematurely fail.

I'm not trying to deter you from doing any modifications because in all actuality I would love to lift a 98 XC about 1.5" and fit some A/T tires on some RWD steelies just to run shit over

depending on the offset they still have the ability to rub if your car is lowered... I get a little rub when I hit crazy bumps because Im lowered but other than that none. Plus I dont turn at full lock cause thats retarded anyways
