2000 S40 Ignition Switch Problems - Repair

Hi, I am a new Volvo owner - My first.

The car I bought would not allow the key to be turned to the crank position - providing that the position is past the III and then returns to the II - but correct me if I am wrong here - Please

Anyway, I removed the electrical part of the switch and have been using a screwdriver to turn the switch and just leave the key in the tumbler.

My questions are;

1) Is the crank position actually III or is past the III?

2) If I have to buy a new switch assembly it will come with the housing and the switch but not the tumbler. How do I remove the key and lock assembly from the old switch?

I also had to remove the gear selection cable and cleaned up the switch on the gear shift knob. That was easy.

Any input or help would be appreciated. I do not know if I am on the right track.

All my other cars are British and I spend a lot of time on my favorite forums for them helping out where I can. Since I am a new volvo owner you can understand why I am lost.

Thanks in advance Bob
