goobernoodles
Wasn't really planning on buying a car, but I saw an 850R listed on craigslist and made an impulse purchase. It's a red 96 854R with 160k. Good maintenance records and drives well. There's a few little things to fix such as the cigarette lighter and headlight wiring harness and a number of fixable cosmetic defects. My main question is what to do about the paint. I washed it on Saturday, and upon waxing, I noticed a bit of paint was coming off on the cotton applicator pad I was using. From googling, it sounds like the clear coat on these cars sucks. So... what can I do, if anything to try to keep it looking decent?
trs80
There is no clear coat on the body. The bumpers, mirrors, spoiler and side skirts do have clear though. The paint transfer is also normal. Polish and wax will keep it looking good. Im in the process of buffing my Red R back to life. Nice purchase.
goobernoodles
Interesting. Good to know. I might just pay to have it professionally buffed.
trs80
Any pro body shop should be able to take care of that for you. Good luck with the R.

I have a black 96 855R, and I have a couple spots on the roof that look like the start of clearcoat failure.

Vagabond
NIce find. Check the link in my sig. If your paint is comparable or better, it should be fine. I did the same thing to my 601 wagon.

The Big Tuna
Interesting. Good to know. I might just pay to have it professionally buffed. If your gonna have it done at a shop, NWAS is the place to go, a little pricey, but for sure worth the money, plus they have levels of details that you chan choose from. If your looking at something on a budget, the auto salon at leschi is worth it as well, not as thorough as NWAS, but you'll be happy!
Guest 96r
Just got my polished at the body shop and it is looking as fresh as the day it left the showroom. As the first owner I remember that day! Get it professionally buffed if you have a red R and then a good coat of wax. Mine is not an R its a 1994 GLT Wagon but it has th ENTIRE roof peeled... Is it just that the GLTs had clear coats or does that mean its been repainted with a clear coat? Im confused...
