gottarollwithit
Hi folks, I'm pretty much new here. My Mom has a 2000 V70XC and the transmission is slipping. At about 60k mi, the trans fluid was burnt pretty badly and we've changed the fluid a few times since then to get the burnt gunk out. Unfortunately, with the last fluid change the transmission now slips and hesitates when in gear. Any idea what transmission i have? iPd says that i have an AW42, but on some salvage sites they state that the car has an AW50-42LE. Which do i have? Any idea what other cars have this transmission and would allow for a clean swap over? It'd be nice if i could get a new trans in this car. Any idea what is involved to do this? It looked pretty difficult. Any info that you guys can provide on this would be much appreciated. Thanks!
gottarollwithit
Oh ya, forgot to ask. In terms of transmission cross over usage, can i use a FWD trans on an AWD car? Will i get funky electrical trans management problems? I thought the Haldex center diff provides for the AWD and is unrelated to the trans, right? I know nothing about this stuff.... Oh gees You don't have a Haldex (03 and newer) You're right you know nothing of what you have! Engine-transmission-bevel gear-propshaft-viscous coupling The power goes in that order. You can use a FWD tranny but you will never have AWD again and there would be no output to the bevel gear (which you would remove for good along with the prophaft). Transmissions that work are 99 or 2000 AWD 4 speeds
gottarollwithit
Yea, i'm totally new when it comes to the newer Volvos. So, if i went with a FWD trans, would i have any weird electrical issues? I think my Mom would be OK with losing here AWD if it fixed her car on the cheap. Any idea which trans i have? What is the difference between an AW42, AW50-42, and AW50-42LE?? Oh gees You don't have a Haldex (03 and newer) You're right you know nothing of what you have! AdirondackVolvo
This is an easy one to figure out. I don't have the owners manual in hand, but in the manual, It lists the transmissions in there respective order. The XC's are Turbocharged so they have the 4 speed AWD transmission. AW-50 i think... As for electrical issues, i don't believe there will be any issues.. Dropping the transmission is a pain. You will have to drop the whole subframe, along with the engine and transmission. I would not recommend a beginner take on this challenge. It's up to you with where you want to go though. Good luck finding a cheap transmission though. T5power
any volvo after 1999 is not capable without some rather intricate/expensive retuning of the ECU, to have a transmission other than the type it was originally specified for. for a 2000 XC, you can only use the 4 speed AWD aisin transmission, the only one that was available for XC's. The Big Tuna
Oh gees You don't have a Haldex (03 and newer) You're right you know nothing of what you have! Go back to swedesped and piss people off you f-ing D-bag. The kid needed help, not some smart a$$ car salesman to preach that he knows everything about volvos It's not even his car, haha, man your a douche! gottarollwithit
First off, thank you all for the help. I actually contacted JRL on the v70xc forum a couple days ago to see if he had a trans lying around (i remembered that he parts out 70 series cars, so he was the first to come to mind). I don't about the bad blood here, but i'm not lookin to cause any trouble here. But yes... I don't know what the heck i'm doin here and am new to this. I'm more of a redblock kinda guy... This is my Mom's car and usually we just bring it to a mechanic for service (he's likely a member here...). If it really does need a tranny replacement, then i might consider doing the job myself b/c it'd be super expensive to have him do it professionally. As we all know, sometimes the cost of repair outweighs replacement. Ok, all else aside, let's talk about cars... I could probably find another trans from a 98-2000 v70xc. How do i replace it? Can someone outline the major steps? At first glance, i'd disconnect and detach all of the cooling and electrical stuff, then drop the subframe/engine/trans. I sense that it i'm missing a few big steps though....

gottarollwithit
Is there a way i can tell whether i have a 4 speed or 5 speed auto? I always thought that it was a 4 speed with overdrive. 00 R always auto 5 speed 00 NA always auto 5 speed 00 XC auto 4 speed or 5 speed I have seen both 99 and older always auto 4 speed Find the right tranny either 4 speed or 5 speed swap and go . There is no bad blood, just when people are asking for help, the last thing that VS needs is for people to talk down to people who need help On another note if you can't find a used tranny call Volvo and Saab auto dismantlers out of Cali. I've got engines, bevel gears, body parts, etc from them, they are great to order from, not too expensive either I'm 90% sure that only 4-speeds came to the US, to be sure call a dealer with your VIN and they can tell
gottarollwithit
Yea, i live down the street from the Volvo and Saab salvage place. I figured i could fairly easily grab a trans there as a backup plan. Installation is another story though. Any tips? Or a general attack plan for this kinda job? The Big Tuna
I'm trying to find a walkthrough for you, but can't find one. My advice is to get a working copy of VADIS On eBay. It's got walkthroughs on everything!
