Scania
I think the T belt broke on start up in the 97 855R. Car didn't even really run, fired up & died off . . . . Wondering if it still bent all the valve's ?
Matty Moo
You think it broke? It either broke or did not break at all. Look and see if it's there.
greekone
Good chance it did, running a compression test will confirm wether or not your you'll be needing a new head.
Keaton85
Taking ONE bolt out will show you what you need to know... broken=bent
AverageVolvo
1 12mm bolt. Remove and check FIRST DO NOT CRANK THE ENGINE OVER AGAIN until you inspect the belt. Broken likely means bent, but not 100% . Valve damage could be confirmed after putting a new belt on and compression checking it.
Scania
So finally got around to looking at the 855, Belt didn't break but appears to have jumped a Few teeth on both cam's & bent all the valve's as there's no real compression. What a son of a Bitch ! ! ! T-belt, tensioner's,water pump . . .ect where all done back at 115K car now has 155K on it. damned if you do, damned if you don't. Oh well . . . . .will have to tear the head off & see what's what. .............Dave
Keaton85
As in did you do the compression check when the belt was off by a couple teeth? Or did you set the timing correct and then do a compression check?
Scania
Didn't have time to reset the timing. may try that next week, but odds are they're bent. Best place to buy valve's ? World Pac is who I was thinking of checking with.
Keaton85
Ok, really, stop and think for a second. If you are off by a couple teeth you can have overlap which would cause low compression! Just chill and get the car sorted before jumping to conclusions! In the time you did a compression check you could have set the correct timing. Scania
How many interference motors have you heard of that start up & don't bend valves. not Jumping to conclusions. . . .but more than likely they're bent. Will see
Keaton85
Plenty, i just fix a 1.8T on a passat that was off by three teeth due to an accident. Ran like crap but once a new belt and everything was swapped its fine now. If you know these motor then you know they havw ZERO clearance! Like pantake every valve easy. Our 5cyl motors seem to have a bit more clearance so being off a few teetg MIGHT be ok. All depends on how much.
bergmjs
A few teeth might not be bent valves. You really should just set the correct timing then test it. Worthless to tear the head off when everything could be perfectly fine and you were just too lazy to check.

Will see At least one - yours. My NA jumped several teeth at startup, I mean a lot like 10 or more. I reset the timing and it fired right up. Compression was fine, ran fine. Then it blew a head gasket so I pulled the head and had it checked - machine shop confirmed the valves were sealing great, no bends.

Will see Sconeman's 855 last month. His jumped a couple teeth and was fine...a few degrees doesn't mean death
sconeman
correct. This is how far advanced my cams were, ~2 teeth. Nothing got damaged but there isn't much more room than that. Lucky told me that 3 teeth can be enough to bend the valves a little but there are no signs of damage. I have good high compression and rock solid 22inches of vacuum. Car ran like crap ( I drove it to work and back with the advanced gears before I knew)
