rbodor3
well I was looking up this on Vida and can't find it, but I can find removing the subframe which is a huge pain. There must be an easier way to do this than removing the entire subframe.
MrWinkey
Just remove the rear bolts and slightly loosen the front ones if needed..pry down and pop them on top of the rear bushings....CAREFULLY !!

Tommy.
Nobody said it yet. How do your axles look?
rbodor3
axles good, just rebuilt them and checked them while under there for installing the o-rings. Should I have gotten O-Rings to install in the front bushings too? I only did rears.
rbodor3
I wonder if this is normal: when I lift the car and support from the subframe, I can wiggle each front tire about 1/4" in either direction. I think the actual steering column moves. My tie rods (inner and outer) are brand new (literally, saturday) because I did have some play beforehand. Is this normal? Possibly cause? rbodor3
bump. Can anybody verify when both tires are lifted off the ground, how much play is at the front wheels through the steering column? I have a little bit of wiggle, but I tihnk the actual steering wheel moves. I have brand new tie rods, literally last weekend. Snugged. Control arm bushings = good, ball joints = good, springs = good, seats= good, shocks = good, axles = good, tires = new, alignment = good. Soooo, only thing I could magine is steering rack replacement??!?
rbodor3
turned out to be driver's ball joint. I checked it a couple of times, no boot tearing so I figured it was fine. And with the car in the air, the droop pushed the joint hard against the control arm so I couldn't tell the ball joint was so worne. When I did get the ball joint off, it was terribly worne. I'll post a video of it (I left my camera at the bars)
pcguru000
Looks like you figured it, good work I was going to suggest (for reference if anyone else is ever hunting this issue) - in my 850 after installing new springs i had a similar popping sound... turned out to be a spring upside down - the mechanic who did the job was a bit embarrassed but claimed he thought could go in either way. Milo
Sorry I didn't look at this earlier as it is very much a balljoint/control arm sounding issue. Easy test of that is as you did, put the car up and try to move the wheel back and forth. Good that you fixed it, that's a quick way to ruin some tires. That is a whole control arm and ball joint assembly right? I know the 94 850 was a two piece unit but after that it was one unit. I don't know about the S60 though. rbodor3
I did lift and wiggle the tire, back and forth & up/down. Couldn't repeat the noise, because the balljoint was worn in such a way that when the suspension was at droop enough force was against the control arm to keep the ball joint seated! It really only would pop out of place. The CA on the S60 is separate from the ball joint. Ball joint is press-fit and then has (2) capscrews holding it into the bearing housing. Was sort of a PITA to remove
Gilhuly
I also would suspect an axle. You are lowered so have less than ideal geometrySorry about that, I didn't notice page 2.
FCP Euro
Do you get this same pop shifting from drive to reverse and vice versa?
