gottago
Reason I ask is because the independent I go to says to only use Volvo synthetic oil, but can I use Mobil One. I have a 01 V70 XC, I have been having the independent do my LOF's, and would have him look it over and tell if anything was needed and if so, I usually do it myself, last time he told me brakes were needed on all 4's, so I bought pads from him and did it myself. When changing pads saw right front cv boot split and puking grease, I was surprised he missed that (replacement axle is on the way from 1A Auto). So I am going to change my own oil from here on out and do all my own inspections. I am a huge believer in factory OEM parts, but I also believe in Mobil One, so question is, what is your opinion on what engine oil to use? VolvoEd
I use Mobil 1 10W-40 High Mileage. It's a very robust oil; it protects very well during high temperatures (105 degree +) and steep mountain grades that I do so often with heavy loads. I just finished a 9,000 mile trip to Alaska and back on the same oil change. The "High Mileage" blend contains extra anti-wear additives, but also a special seal sweller that can help with minor leaks in an old engine. I have definitely noticed a major drop in oil consumption. Over the Alaska trip, I lost only 0.75 of a quart. With Castrol Edge 10W-30 I lost over a quart in around 5,000 miles. I'm very happy with this oil, and it will probably be the oil my car goes to the grave with. The only time I can foresee switching is in the winter, when I'll go to Mobil's 0W-40. Justin R32
I've always used Valvoline 10W-30 High Mileage in all my cars. My dad has used the same 98 S70T5M 98 V70R 98 V70GLT 97 850R 95 T5R 94 TURBO Change it every 2500 to 3000 miles. Ohio
tca217
I started using 10 30 wt. Castrol full syn when I first bought my Volvo. Had around 160,000 on it then and has 208,000 on it now. No leaks, runs great, never had any problems with it. use maybe 1/4 quart between changes (+ or - 4500 miles). I use Mobil one full syn in my 97 Camaro with no problems. I would say either one will work, just stay with one or the other, don't go back and forth. ...................TIM
Keaton85
You can flip flop all you want, there is no ill effect by doing so. Use whatever quality oil you want and change it out according to your driving habbits. Everyone will chime in with a brand and say it runs great. Dont just run to a set brand because joe shmo over here or there stated its great!!! Haha What you should really be asking is what weight and what OCI for your driving habbits. Personally I use whatever is on sale that I can get for a good cost and stock up on that. But whatevet makes you feel all warm and fuzy inside when you put it in your car haha Here is a list to check out PP 40w Castrol GC 40w (I think the 30w on this is just a hair below a 40w rating) M1 EP 40w Amsoil 40w Those are just some of the top contenders in the regular consumer market. We are talking 10k+ OCIs on a mostly highway vehicle with these. Scale back according to oil type, grade, brand, climate and driving habbits. Keaton85
Side note: We will all be wrong on this topic, no one here will be able to tell you how to handle your oil/filter choices. It will depend on many factors like i stated, just do you own homework and dont get wrapped up in the advertising hype on select brands.... JesterKB
Bobistheoilguy.com is an excellent reference. I found this particular article quite enlightening. My last change I used Mobile 1 0-30. I have noted no difference so far with 2500 miles since the change. I only run synthetic, but in the past have run Mobile, Valvolene, Castrol and Pennzoil at 5-30 weight. With 122500 on the ticker, I use ZERO oil between changes (I'm running 5K changes since crossing the 100K boundary) and as stated above with 2500 on this change, I'm still on the top line. My wife's 2006 Toyota Matrix just changed over last weekend. Same schedule and products as above and this car also does not use a drop between changes. Far too early to comment on how the 0-30 weight will work, but so far so good. Jerry 01 V70 T5a with 122500 miles
Che'_Moderator
Thats is one of the worst sites. Oil changes year to year and no one covers that or updates old reviews. Its like the tirerack of oil.

Im sure its gonna get alot of hits since its a very common question on many boards.

Im sure its gonna get alot of hits since its a very common question on many boards. For the same reasons. The info changes year to year and is really ahrd to keep up on. I mean there is general info pased on groups and ad-packs but thats all out there already. Couple that with no one listens and I dont see the point. I will say I use group V oil and tend to stick with K&N filters. They filter the longest and at the highest flow rate of what I have tested. They are 20um but IMHO thats more than enough and if you really want more then you should be running a primary and seconday filter.

Im sure its gonna get alot of hits since its a very common question on many boards. That was not my point. Point is, that you are going to end up spending a ton on oil if you keep up with the same "name" brand oils at the retail cost. If you stock up on quality synthetics while they are on sale or free (yes free), then you will be spending about the same as people on dino. Chuck just backed up my point, it's near impossible to give an unbiased opinion on OCIs, brand and so forth. No one will listen, they will just run to the advertising of M1 and waste everyone else time with topics like this (no offense OP). Like I said, no one will be 100% correct, since it's just going to be up to the owner of the vehicle to provide what they "think" is best for their own machinery. caanglin
I just buy cheap ass Mobil 1 10-40 at Walmart and a Bosch filter. Oil change = $30.
Che'_Moderator
^^ LOL Thats why. I do not get as many as I used to but still get maybe 15 oil assays a year. Despite that you just cannot argue with that logic.

gottago
Thanks for all your input, you've answered my question, I do beleive all quality, name brand synthetics are equally good in both lubricating and protective qualities, if we were talking about fossil oils, then i would have all kinds of opinions, parafin vs non parafin base, sludge build up etc. but let's not go there. What i'm talking about is oil for the wife's wagon. This is just a basic grocery getter, to and from work with a 5 year old strapped in the backseat with a 5 point. This car does not see hard driving or max shift points, just plain old, almost granny driving habits, I only drive ths car when we all are going somewhere, last time I buried my foot into it was when we were buying it. So back to my question, this indy i've ben going to since we bought it, swears by using all and only OEM parts, which i appreciate and respect, after spending 30+ years in management at new car service departments. But when it comes to oil, I really dont want to go to the dealer and buy Volvo oil, I know they dont make oil and just wanted to make sure there wasn't some waazoo reason for using Volvo motor oil. So in the next few weeks I will look a little more closely at the oils at costco, walmart and autozone and make my purchase. But for now, the axle came and i'm going to replace it today, if some issue comes up when replacing it, I will post, otherwise, thanks again for all your info.
