P0455 V70 Help

hey all...

I have a '98 V70 GLT with 197k miles on it. has had a P0455 code for the time i've owned it and from what the previous owner said has been on awhile for him too. I'm getting kind of bored resetting the light and am looking for a fix.

I replaced the aftermarket fuel cap with a oem volvo one. I swapped the square purge valve (the one on the radiator) with a spare that came in a parts bin with the car. Not 100% sure that the valve i used is good/bad/other. Neither repair yielded any results.

The light only sets once every 10 days or so. Usually after I have come off the highway and get stuck at a long light. I can drive a 700 mile round trip with out it ever setting the code, but if i get stuck at a long light the light comes on. Never sets when i'm actually moving. no dependence on fuel level or filling the tank.

What system test runs under those conditions? I'm thinking there is another emissions valve that is trying to purge or do a self test when i'm sitting at those long lights. I still need to get under the back of the car to check the vent hoses, but would think that if they were cracked it wouldn't take so long for the code to set as they'd be leaking all the time.

I have done lots of searches on this and other sites but haven't seen a description similar to this. most state the light comes on right after fueling or shortly after clearing the light. mine takes several days/drive cycles to come back on.

thanks in advance, I'll be sure to update with the solution (if/when found).

ok - my bad... after posting felt guilty cuz i hadn't checked everything before asking a question. put the back of the car up some ramps, crawled under and saw two large vent lines going to the canister that are cracked. one is the "j-pipe" that goes from the vent valve? to the canister, the other goes back towards the tank.

just seems odd that it takes so long for the code to set with cracked hoses that are obviously leaking all the time.

guess i'm making a trip up to the volvo dealer... is there an alternative for finding vent hose that size and i could fab up myself? with the line going to the tank, is there a junction anywhere so i don't have to route all the way to the tank? was thinking if not i could put a piece of pipe and make a union, clamp on both sides.

might as well replace the fuel filter while im there, looks a bit rusty. will give me some room to work having it out of the way.

i will post after replacing those two lines if it solved the problem or if there is still an issue.

Welcome

Search is your friend.... the evap monitors are usually last too set (meaning the long delayed MIL) ..the 98's can be the worst too set monitors at times as they don't like flywheel adaptation like the earlier 850's do. It's all in programming and the J-hose/ hoses will probably correct the P0455 along with an OEM gas cap.

yah - i had searched and saw the j-pipe comment, thats why i crawled under to look. just thought was odd that takes so long to set the code. will def update once i replace the hoses. looks like fcp has the two hoses i need. will compare with the dealer to see what they got.

  • 2 weeks later...

got the two hoses at the canister replaced. also replaced the fuel filter, having the filter out of the way made it easier to replace the evap lines anyway. the hardest part was removing the oem crimp clamps. they aren't in a easy spot to get any sort of tool on them. the new hoses didn't come with clamps and i didn't install any when i put the new hoses on. the hoses fit very snug over the barbed fittings.

drove the car for a week no problems. day before i was to take it in for inspection the CEL came back on. I scanned it and thankfully it was only the P0107 code that comes up every few weeks/months. cleared it and took a nice half hour drive and got 3/5 of the monitors to reset. took it in for inspection and passed flying colors. (in ny, can have 2 monitors not ready to pass emissions inspection for my model year).

thanks for everyones help and archived posts for pointing me in the right direction to fix the problem.
