esundell90
Looking at an 01 XC70 for myself as a nice daily. I've had an 850 in the past, really got into volvo's and wanted a wagon with AWD and lots of room, which this fits the bill. Now, I hear about the notorious tranny issue that these cars seem to have, but how many does it affect and how exactly do you know you have issues? I've been told if it shifts hard you have the problem? Is that really about it? Seems I could live with it shifting kinda hard, but I'm assuming if you neglect it the tranny will destroy itself? Any other major issues I should be aware of? The car has 145k on it, and full records. Adult owned, no rust, dings ect. It looks super sharp. T-belt, ignition coils, plugs and other tune up items including new tires and windshield were done in the last 15k on the car. I'm thinking I could get the car for 6k even, maybe 5800 or so. Thoughts? Is this a car people would recommend I'd steer clear of? It's a shame because I really like the car, but if it's going to be like my old 850 and not be reliable worth a damn (though the 850 was high milage/modded) I guess I'll look elsewhere? I really like volvo's and the wagon, perhaps a 2wd wagon? But I like the 4wd + ground clearance option a lot, as I live where there is a LOT of snow/crappy roads.. SeamusW
My mom has a 2001. The tranny did die, but the rebuilt is good so far. Lots of electrical problems. I'd go with an 03 or later, better trans, and Haldex awd

Ihatespeedbumps
As mentioned above, not a good idea. AWD trannies die more frequently too. Unless they have record of a very recent replacement, don't buy the car unless you can afford a transmission. +1 to Justin, 03+ only.
