volvoluvin
Tonight, I pulled hard off the line, chirp, revs, 30kms, 5000rpm, full boost, suddenly, rev limiter, wtf, shift, go no where...car running...no smoke...no oil, no exploding pieces flying... I can make the speedo move by putting it in gear and reving...but car doesn't move...nasty noises occur if I put it in 5th and rev the motor... What did I explode? Quaffie diff? Output shaft? Worse? Any thoughts/help would be useful...
tca217
Axels? Put it on jack stands, have someone put it in gear and let out the clutch slowly and look underneath at the axels and see if they are moving or not. Someplace to start anyhow. Good luck.......................TIM
Dick Dastardly
This doesn't sound good..Its acts like its in neutral when in gear, just noisy?.. I would check for broken axle or CV joint first too...maybe splines on shaft or hub too..(I have had that happen before on another car)..after that..UH OH Do what tca217 suggested and safely jack it up and run it in gear and see what, if anything, is turning... thewhiteguy1
if you broke an axle the other wheel won't turn. i forget if the speedo acted like that when my axle snapped.
TRACStar
I'm not sure how the diff is setup but I would think it must be something in the diff/axles since the speedo registers movement. Where does the speedo pickup its signal from? If it was a factory open diff and the axles were ok if say you fragged the spider gears. How long had the diff been in? Maybe there was a factory defect. Dismiss everything I said about the diff if you check it and find a broken axle.
TyConn
abs module calculates the speed...ever notice if you disconnect both of the front abs sensors, you don't have a speed reading?
volvoluvin
Thanks gents - I'll know more end of day - Considering I'm running a Quaife LSD in it, I'm REALLY hoping I didn't bone that... I've also been having some weird driveline "tramping" on throttle lift, so I'm wondering if that has something to do with it... This will suck if it's a big explosion of internals... Different speedo input here - He's driving a '95.
ozzimark
What did I explode? You'll find out really quick when you look under the car. :P
BlackT5
The older models have the speed gear on the diff, so your diff is spinning if the speedo goes up. Jack it up and take a look, probably an axle.
BEJinFBK
If there's a Quaife in there, I sure Hope it's an axle!
volvoluvin
It was the clutch - I had it towed to a shop as I don't have the time right now...Not sure what part of the clutch, don't have those details yet...fun...

If the clutch is slipping bad enough that the car won't move, then the speedo shouldn't move. Hate to see you buy a clutch if it's something as simple as an axle :o

Hate to see you buy a clutch if it's something as simple as an axle Ya - I'm just not 100% convinced either...I just can't see how it's the clutch...this was a case of full let go...no "partial" grabbing etc...just nothing... Rev the car in any gear and you would see the "appropriate" speed for that gear/rpm on the speedo...but it no go...there was some metalic sounds in 5th at 100kmh when sitting there... I'll go out and see it next week and get better details...I'm away for a few days... Either way, it's out of action for a while...

Hate to see you buy a clutch if it's something as simple as an axle This. If the speed is picked up off the diff and the speedo registers speed than it has to be something post diff. My brain refuses to let me think anything else. Unless there is something REALLY weird going on. If its picked up off the abs then someone stole your wheels. If a shop is telling you this try to have someone else (that you trust) check it out. Volvo5.0 is absolutely right, if your clutch wasn't catching at all, nothing in the trans would turn= no speedo movement.
