Front Strut Bolts/nuts

Jut a quick question, I'm installing new front shocks, and I was wondering if you really have to replace both the bolts and the nuts?

If so, do they have to be of specific strength, and officially from Volvo? Or could I just get the same size/thickness bolt + locking nut, and be done with it?

I cant seem to find a specific Volvo 850 bolt/nut set for my struts, and my new shocks didn't come with any either.

you dont HAVE to... but its always a good idea because they are on there pretty tight & some people half ass them or round them off trying to be creative in how to hold the star bit on the spindle itself while trying to get the nut off. If you have an air wrench use that to REMOVE them because it will help prevent the spindle from spinning freely. Each nut was a whole 2 dollars... why not just buy new ones for the sake of it

200 for struts & shit... 2 dollars for 2 nuts...

I want to replace them but not if I have to wait a week for them to arrive from Volvo. So do they have to be volvo (do they used reinforced ones for example), or could I just go to the local hardware store and give them the old ones, so they can find a similar pair of new ones?

every time I have bought new struts they have always come with new spindle nuts.

985660-0 - flange lock nut... possible is the P/N I ordered them & it was the only one with a (2) quantity so hopefully thats right?

I paid 2.72 total

I believe they were stamped 8.8 (thats the grade) so as long as you do that you should be okay

Strut to steering knuckle nuts and bolts: Most people do not replace them. It is good if you do, but i never have.

They are grade 10 I think, I would not just get them from a hardware store. You can always swap them in later if you really want to replace them.

Well actually I got new struts, springs, rubbers, bearings and endlinks on both sides. But they are easily replaced I guess.

So grade 10 or from Volvo originally is what I need, right? I'll drop by our hardware specialist tomorrow. Thanks for the advice.

* With "they" i meant the bolts+nuts

recently did a strut job on one car where i did purchase new strut bolts and nuts, i kept the old hardware because they came out without trouble and they were in good condition.

fast forward to 2 weeks ago when i replaced the front wheel bearings on another car that was pulling to the right to begin with so i decided to remove the knuckle bolts since the car was going to get an alignment afterwards anyways - one of the bolts sheared off so i ended up reusing 1 bolt+nut from the other car.

i'd order the new hardware just for that reason, the last thing you would want would be to have the car up on jacks and not having the right parts if the old parts break.
