FAST850R
Hello, I was going to replace trunk struts, but I don't know how. It seems like I don't need any wrench, sockets....but I am not sure. Can anyone give me advice how to replace them? Thank you.
marcopolo
Wagon or sedan?
Guest hotfoot
He said "trunk", so I assume he's crawling around inside his sedan...On my 850R, the entire panel that goes from the rear seat, along the side, back to the trunk lid has to be popped off for access. I use a pair of those really long Harbor Freight "pinch-type" longnose pliers to get behind the panel and pop the plastic screws out nicely, without breakage...have been using those for years on a variety of vehicles, and have saved countless plastic gizmos from breakage (still have ruined a few). I still haven't gotten to my struts, and having the Timing Belt .Water Pump done in a couple days, then the trunk struts will follow. It seems there are two types, depending is there is a spoiler or not, so be sure to get the proper ones.
trs80
The end of the strut that connects to the trunk is pressed onto a post and retained by a small clip. The body end is a U shaped connection that is pressed down and into place. So in order to remove them, first locate the retaining clip and remove it. Set aside as it will be reused. Then simply pry the strut off the small post, make sure the plastic bushing comes off as well. Next hit up on the strut till it pops off the other end. The install is simply reverse. Do this with the trunk closed or securely propped open, it is extremely heavy and will hurt if taken to the face. I attached both replacements to the body first and then had a helper hold the trunk open so I could press the other end onto the small posts. FAST850R
The trunk is already heavy and the struts are not holding it anymore. Thank you so much for the links and advice. It's time to fix them.
Kayci
If yours happens to be a wagon, I found it easier to loosen the 2 bolts holding the bracket attached to the body; provided more wiggle room and the strut came out easily with a few knocks of a hammer. The trunk end came out with ease just prying it with my hands.
FAST850R
Thank you for the tip, Kayci. Mine is a sedan so it's little different.
