Auto Trans Not Downshifting

Hey all. I have a 98 v70 fwd auto with just under 200k miles. Since I bought it last year it has always shifted hard into 3rd, a bit smoother with light throttle. I did a partial drain and fill last month as the trans fluid was black as 3day old coffee. It did not smell burnt or anything

Last few days after a 20 min hwy drive, when slowing down it feels like it stays in either 4th or 3rd gear like if u didn't downshift or push the clutch in, and then finally downshifts and is smooth braking again.

I have no cel or flashing shift light. Does this sound like the trans is getting ready to die or something else?

Thanks in advance.

Most likely the torque converter clutch is staying applied. The lock-up solenoid is probably clogged. Try a complete flush and add a bottle of Lube Guard

that is in the red bottle. Its worth a try.

Yah I was thinking possibly stuck TCC too. Am reluctant to do a total flush as the fluid was so old and bad. I did try hitting the brake once I was in TCC lockup and it did unlock right away. Will try another drain and full.

  • 3 months later...

just wanted to give an update. the problem was fairly intermit then all of a sudden started getting stalling issues, CEL P0120 and after a couple weeks P0123 and getting very erratic shifts, flashing upshift light and lights on shifter. if i let go of the throttle while cruising the trans would downshift violently, also would have late upshifts, once wouldn't go into TCC lockup.

i replaced the throttle position sensor and everything has been cleared up. no more CEL, shifts correctly, even seems to have gotten rid of the harsh upshift into 3rd gear that i always had. its been 2 weeks since i replaced the sensor and no more troubles.
