Question For People In Sales.

This is some shit I don't understand, I'm sure some of you know why...I just don't get it.

I have a company coming out tomorrow to give me a quote on adding some more insulation to my attic. Nothing big, just another 8 inches of cellulose. I'm confirming the appointment on the phone, and the woman says they want BOTH people to be there, as in husband and wife. So, I just tell the broad...

"I don't know if she'll be here or not...doesn't matter anyway, we're talking about insulation, not candles or baking cookies. She's irritating to me, so she'll probably irritate you too"

She says, "But sir, it's a major decision and we like both people to be there"...I reply "it's under $1k, not really a major purchase....how about we say I'm gay and I just have some random dude over, he'll be my man-spouse...will that work"?

She says "We'll see you tomorrow at 5". She got the idea.

So, what's up with this? I've had it happen once before with some carpet but made the guy leave as he was playing bullshit mind games with us. This particular outfit doesn't do the high pressure or manipulation games...so they aren't going to play us against each other. So, why the need for two of us to be there just to get an insulation quote?

I can't stand that shit. I don't want a presentation, I just want to know what you have, when and how much...easy shit. The last carpet guy that was here made timeshare salesmen look like 1st grade girls...I wanted to kill that guy.

I'll cancel that. I'm only looking at $500 in actual insulation, I can buy it locally, have it delivered then pay some neighborhood kids to help me do it. It's wide open up there, I just don't want to be the one up there.

I do use the "Shitter" line quite often with her as it is.....mainly to piss her off.

1, Are you sure she got the point, or maybe she thought you really have a boyfriend and didn't want to push her luck with the PC issue? :P

2, $1k job, want all parties there? GTFO. Bullshit, and hell even if it was $1million job, unless both parties need to sign paperwork, again I say, GTFO.

3. Go to home depot, rent blown in insulator device, and a bale of the proper feed for it. Save money, and keep idiots outside the house.

I think the answer to your question is that they've been burned too many times by one spouse getting the quote and being on board while the other allegedly says no later on and they cancel. Or maybe they don't want you to try and bargain down the price by saying "the wife says its too much money right now for us". Just tell them her place is in the kitchen and no where else, so unless they want to insulate the sink and the oven, she'll be keeping her mouth shut before she gets another black eye. Just hope they don't call you in for spousal abuse  I like a helpful employee, but I can't stand when sales people push. I don't know if it was acceptable in previous generations, but I'm pretty sure 'my' generation very much hates when people try to push the sale. We know you greeted us nicely as we walked in and follow us around the store because you want the commission, so drop the act.

Oh, ya, I'm not in sales. So.... I'm useless to you.

If you want to avoid this in the future you can generate what's called an RFP "requirements for proposal/purchase". A common practice in the corp world for larger system replacements however can be used for anything really. It does however require fine level detail so that they can't come back with questions.

I don't use bullshit lines like that on the phone, but if I meet with a customer in person abut an install (patio, pond..whatever) I like to have both there because in my business its very cosmetic and you really get stuck in the middle with "he said she said" crap (guys want cheap and chicks want the fanciest, most expensive stuff $ can buy)...but for attic insulation???? Weird...
